I have drained the old fluid out and it was a clear fluid that had turned blackish-I think it was some type of brake fluid.  I am thinking of using the synthetic Dextron VI trans fluid which is compatible with the older trans fluids. I am considering taking them apart and cleaning them but would most likely need to replace the packings. My questions are--is the fluid I am thinking of using OK, Does anyone have a tool for the gland nuts or any ideas about making one, And any leads as to where to get new packings?  Thanks, Buell Powell

I made a tool from 1/4 inch steel plate, 3"x18".  Drilled a hole near one end that exceeded the diameter of the strut, then cut a slot to that hole, to allow it to slip around the strut.  I then drilled two 1/4 inch (?) holes to line up with the small holes in the top of the packing-nut.  I put two short pieces of music wire into those two holes, and the nut came right off.  Probably overkill, but the results were great.  The steel plate might have been a bit smaller that what I described  --  possibly even 1/8 inch x 2"  --  it was just material that I had laying around.

'I know that it may be a little late in coming, but sometime in the long distant past I located an infinitely variable divider type gland wrench with 1/4" pegs on it.  I think that the pegs were about 3/8" long.  I think that I found it a catalogue store in Arizona.  The only modification that I needed to do was to remove about 1/32" from the inner edge of the arms.  The clearance between the hole on the gland nut it pretty tight.I'll try to go back in the archives to see if I can locate the E-mail.Bob

'Ididn't find it where I thought it was, but I found a good site. Try "PROTO Tools",  "Black Oxide Adjustable Face Spanner Wrenches"  check "JC483".  Overall length 8 1/4", Pin dia. - 1/4"

        I am working on the main landing gear struts for my F24. I have drained the old fluid out and it was a clear fluid that had turned blackish-I think it was some type of brake fluid.  I am thinking of using the synthetic Dextron VI trans fluid which is compatible with the older trans fluids. I am considering taking them apart and cleaning them but would most likely need to replace the packings. My questions are--is the fluid I am thinking of using OK, Does anyone have a tool for the gland nuts or any ideas about making one, And any leads as to where to get new packings?  Thanks, Buell Powell
