I'd like to talk to someone who has experience with, or has recently restored the vertical stabilizer (fin) of a 24. There are three rudder hinge mountings (clevices) bolted to the aft end of the main spar of the fin and the top two on mine are a little loose The fin is of all wood construction and is a closed wood-covered box. The lower part of the main spar of the fin is bolted to the tail-post of the steel-tube fuselage frame, of course. The lower hinge clevis is fastened by a bolt which passes through the fin main spar, and it has a nut which is accessible. However, the top two are not accessible because the fin is a closed box. I'm wondering how the top two hinge clevices are fastened, and how I will tighten them. Are there nuts of some kind in there that are captured? Anyway, I'd appreciate it if someone would let me know the details of the fin construction or anything else related to the rudder hinge clevices mounted thereto. Thanks.'

' If you have the Fairchild club CD drawing 4668 shows it all – I have recently respard and reskinned my fin - They are AN366-420 (MS21078-4) anchor nuts held in place by 2 wood screws. ' Maybe the wood has shrunk a little – can you tighten the bolts that secure the clevis a little? Frank From: fairchildclub@yahoogroups.com [mailto:fairchildclub@yahoogroups.com] On Behalf Of lowea1@comcast.net

Turn the hinges. you need to secure the bolt head somehow so the bolt head turns with the hing. Wedge a small screwdriver blade against the nut. Its the same setup as the lower hinge except you can't get a socket on the bolt head to tighten. Not to tight. Snug is fine.
