Ranger

'Hi

A friend is planning to build a replica from the
twenty?s. The aircraft was built for the Swedish
air force.



It was equipped with a 6 cyl. Junker L5 engine.
Those engines are gone long time ago.

He has asked me if we know any application where
the Ranger was installed with the cylinders
upright or if there is some kind of modification
to do so.

'I remember growing up with my father talking about plans to turn the ranger upright to put it in a Fokker biplane.

I remember seeing the plans and notes to do this, but I do not remember who made the plans.

'I do not have any direct knowledge but I can recall that hot rodders ran
ranger engines upright immediately after WWII. That may be another area
to search.

'Have your friend contact Andy Parks. Andy flies a Foker D-VII with an inverted Ranger. I believe that his dad built the airplane. He had some engine problems at first, but I believe that they are all sorted out now. His airport is 5,000 feet MSL (1,500 m). He is a nice (but busy) fella. He has a wonderful museum of flying WWI airplanes. You can view some of his operations at http://www.lafayettefoundation.org/

'I'd check with Al Holloway, Holloway Engineering. I remember seeing an old race car in his shop with an upright Ranger in it, in for repairs. Looked pretty cool.His # (530) 283-2500.

Yes the Ranger has been installed with the Cylinders upright in WW I
aircraft and others. Has also been installed sideways in race cars. I don?t
have any more info in the FC DVD. It has been documented over the years in
the EAA mags.

'Talk to Al Ball of Antique Aero Engines in Santa Paula 805-525-9464. I believe he and his son just did that to a Ranger engine for one of his customers.

'I don't think that ANDY was injured a few month ago. Mark Holiday suffered near mortal injuries when the Fokker DR.I TriPlane that he was flying crashed. Mark is miraculously recovering, I believe that the plane was destroyed.
