Tailwheel steering cable attachment - F24 (UC61K)

Post by Frank »

'Folks,
I am uncertain whether the forward end of the turnbuckles on the tailwheel steering cables need bushes in them where they attach to the rudder cable idlers. None of the publications I have show this area in detail. What think you?
Also no tension is shown for these cables - ideas and/or experience with this would be much appreciated.

Many thanks and a Happy New Year to all

'No bushing is required, the turnbuckle should be 0.188 and the Rudder Idler attach hole should be 0.189. As far as cable tension, the rudder travel and cables should be rigged first at 51 lbs, then attach the steering cables and check the steering travel. The cable lenght is predetermined as well as the aft turnbuckle length. The spring supplies the correct cable tension and the forward turnbucle is used for minor adjustment to keep the tail wheel straight with wheel off ground and rudder in streamline. IMPORTANT With wheel on the ground and full rudder depressed the spring should not be stacked or the steering cable interfear with full rudder travel.

'Thank you very much Jim - just what I was looking for.
I will be making new steering cables as the old ones had some strands broken where they went around the thimbles that attach to the tailwheel yoke.
I'm afraid I will be cheating and use Nicopress sleeves rather than splices.

Have a Happy and healthy new year
