Ranger Engine Parameters
'I JUST completed a restoration on my 1939 Fairchild 24. It has a Ranger engine.
Everything seems to run perfectly; I've got about 5 hours ground time on the engine, and have flown it about 2 hours. Oil consumption is nil, and it hasn't missed a beat.
Just wondering, the oil temp is consistent around 190 degrees F, and the CHT is steady around 250. Is this normal?
The days have been hot and fairly humid, but I can't seem to find any information on normal operating ranges of the engine...
Any input would help. Thanks!
-Dan'

'Something seriously wrong if its not using any oil:)
Oil temp is a bit high as desired max is 170, but redline is 200. It is still breaking in so the temp may come down.

'For what it is worth, my Ranger in a PT-19 runs about 160 to 170 deg's F

'Jack,
Thanks for the info. From what I've gathered everything is running as it should. I've hit 190 oil temp while doing touch-and-gos, and really working the engine... It drops at cruise.
Thanks again,

'Hello!
The engine has about 150 hours SMOH, so its well broken in. Oil pressure at cruise is right around 50, higher at takeoff, lower at idle.

'Wondering who did the o'haul. My freshly redone (Antique Aero) C-5 runs
about the same oil temp as yours. Brad Ball says not to worry about that
temp with his rebuilds. I don't have a cht gauge.

'Dan,
I think you are doing just fine. Many engine pros want engine oil temp of at least 185 degrees, in order to remove moisture from the engine oil. I have a 1939 with a large oil cooler hanging out the bottom, and can't get my oil over 160 degrees unless I block off part of the cooler.
Your 250 degree Cyl Head Temps are just fine. I recall that the max climb temp is about 425 and max cruise temp is about 350. The hottest cylinders on the engine are #2 and #5. There is a factory mod to the removable baffle that is supposed to help cool #5.

Sorry I can't help you there; the engine was rebuilt back in the 1970s and crated... We just checked it out - everything is normal... I'd have to go through the stacks of paperwork to figure out who did the overhaul and when
