'Yes, that works well down to about 40 degrees. Then you need to switch to
50wt. I like Aeroshell plus. Protects the innards from rust and my oil
consumption actually goes DOWN. It's all going to look black almost
immediately after the first run. Don't worry, that means the oil is doing
its thing.

'Pretty much a stock engine w/ 20-over pistons. None of Al Ball's neat
tricks so the engine consumes 1 1/4 qt in the summer with 60wt and about 3/4
qt in the relatively mild NW winters with 50wt. This engine is installed in
a Great Lakes so we're talking acrobatic flight for about 20 per-cent of the
time. I'm happy with the engine but I had to learn to keep it cool and stay
away from the mixture on the cross-country flights. Went through a few
valves and had some stuck rings over the years.

I know the evidence is all anecdotal, but since I've started regularly using
MMO, I've never had another stuck valve or rings. I guess the Army knew
something we've forgotten back when they specified Marvel on the PT-19's.

'If I knew all of Al's tricks, I'd be doing the overhauls. He does ring
mods - mostly a different oils scraper ring. Seals the sludge plug in the
crank. Modified pistons and modified tolerances. Can't believe you've
never heard of Antique Aero Engines. Do a search on the Fairchild Club site
with Al's name. There must be hundreds of refs.

'I used to lean when I got above 5K but I had to replace two jugs in two
years. I fly full rich now, keep the temps low and the 220
Continental-powered Starduster I used to try to keep up with crashed. So
I'm not trying to set any speed records. But that's just in my airplane.
YMMV.

'I only used mineral oil on a new or rebuilt engine, then switch to AeroShell
120. I live in San Diego where the weather is warm. The mineral oil helps
the rings to seat, then after about 20 hours, I switch to regular oil and
see a decrease in oil consumption. I never use mineral oil on a engine with
more than 50 hours.
