Strut packing & jacking the tail

Post by robertetter@ymail.com »

'I have 2 sets of strut packings.
I also made a detachable jack pad for the tail of my "24". I need only to draw it up, then mail it. My computer isn't up to scanning.
It will fit between the mounting tabs for the drag link. It is a long "U" channel, with a extended pad on the bottom. Than a separate pin will fit through the "U" channel, and pinning below the small diagonal tube, just to the rear of the attach point.

'Bob,

I've been traveling, and still haven't worked on my tailwheel problems. Your jacking solution is of great interest.

Regards,
Bill C.

'I will sit down at the computer this weekend, in between house work & football and draw it, the jack assembly, on the computer. I would scan it, then send it, but the computer that I have doesn't allow much flexibility. I tried to jack the tail, many many years ago, and it wasn't pretty. I ran the risk of damaging the bottom longerons.

'Hi Robert
I need some help on my F24W46. I know you were doing a great job on yours from the pictures you sent me last summer. Do you have any templates or traceings of the upper and lower fairing bulkheads? The Fairchild drawing was superceded by shop templates on these bulkheads and mine were either missing or deteriated beyond use.
Thanks

'I am in the same boat with the fairings...however...they were rebuilt in an
unacceptable fashion...and I can use them as patterns for a do-over. When
I dis-assemble them I will make patterns.

The wood chosen looks like pine....the worksmanship (by a hired hand)
turned out to be very poor.

'I'm sorry that I don't have my old ones. I guess that they were alot better than nothing. At the time I was seriously limited by available space. I was a little wiser when it came to the wings. I still have all 4 spars, and pieces and parts of 1 set of ribs. The spars show early signs of dry rot, but all in all, they are in really good shape.

'The spring, that I thought was for the tail wheel, apparently isn't. The drawing looks like it said 7" plus, what I have is 6" plus.
Specs on mine: The diameter of the spring stock .15", 1" overall diameter, and 18.5 full wraps. Now, where did I get this darn thing?
