'Jon,
I have the wet vacuum pump setup. It came that way with the airplane. It's the original pump and was overhauled years ago. There's a small rectangular air/oil separator hanging on the firewall. About the level of the pump. It's about 6" X 4" and an Inch deep. I believe it's a Pesco or something like that It's not marked. It has a ½ " nipple on the narrow side were the vacuum pump exhaust hose attaches. On top there's a 90 degree nipple for a hose and aluminum tube arraignment that runs down the firewall and exits outside the airplane in the same area where the engine breather tube and fuel drain exit.
On the bottom of the separator there's a 90degree brass elbow fitting with a 7" or 8" hose attached that runs straight to the backside of the engine. Another straight brass fitting is on the end of the hose. It just screws directly into the engine block very close to where the pump is mounted. Don't you have about a ½ inch pipe plug there between the pump and generator ? If you do, that's where the oil runs back into the engine. The old manuals show this hole as being an engine to tank vent hole. My "engine to tank vent" is a couple of inches above this hole.
