NEW MEMBER -- stinsonman2000

Post by dcasali »

'Comment from user: stinsonman2000

I like the WW2 era aircraft. My dad had a PT19 in the 50s. I would like
to own a 19 0r 26 with the ranger engine.Info from this group would be
invaluable.

How This Group Works

Post by dcasali »

'Let me see if I can clear this up.

The Fairchild club Yahoo! group was set up almost ten years ago and is
derived from a rather primitive form of Internet communication known
as a 'newsgroup" ... a form that actually pre-dates the creation of
the world wide web. While it is simplistic, and no doubt better
structures are available, nobody has taken the time and energy to
create one. Yahoo! groups cost nothing and take minimal time to
administer. Currently their are 415 active members in this group, many
of whom are Fairchild aircraft owners.

A newsgroup works by allowing the 'posting' of email messages to the
group. Group members can choose to receive copies of messages as they
are posted, or a compilation of all posts made during a day in one
email, or they can choose to not receive any emails, but to read the
postings via the web by going to the Yahoo! groups page for this group
( http://groups.yahoo.com/group/fairchildclub/ ). From that page you
can also modify your posting distribution choice.

All information exchange takes place by the posting of messages to the
group as a whole. To prevent members email addresses from being
harvested by spammers, email addresses are not exposed. Likewise, to
make participation risk free, html and other non-text attachments,
which can be vectors for viruses, are not allowed in postings.

At the group web page ( http://groups.yahoo.com/group/fairchildclub/ )
one can access the group photo and file libraries. Any group member
can post items to these libraries. Also from that page one can search
the 10 years of accumulated postings using a simple search box or an
advanced search dialog ( http://groups.yahoo.com/group/fairchildclub/msearch_adv
)

This is a moderated group. To join, one must write a brief note to the
moderator (me) and I will approve or disapprove the application.
Unless I have reason to believe the applicant is a spammer (rare, but
last week I received a request stating "hi my friend invite" ? I asked
for more detail, which was never forthcoming. ) Most unmoderated
groups become flooded with spam and lose any value.

Often the new user comment made when signing up would be of interest
to the group as a whole. Yahoo! provides no automatic mechanism for
these comments to go to the group, so I post an email to the group and
purposely mask out the email address for the reasons given above. An
unfortunate side effect of that is that, since the email now comes
from my address, I often get the responses to sign up comments such as
"I want to buy a Warner engined Fairchild" .... hence I've added a
signature line to these NEW MEMBER posts stating "PLEASE DIRECT ANY
RESPONSES TO THE NEW MEMBER, NOT THE GROUP MODERATOR (this email
address)" because I'm not in the market, the new member is.

The correct way to contact that member is to respond to the post using
the "reply to group" link at the bottom of the email. I will add this
information to my signature line.

Where the group structure is particularly weak is in organizing the
very useful information that flows through it. Searching can be
tedious. We could really use an FAQ structure as well. Perhaps the
Fairchild Club web site will someday incorporate these features. I
have preserved most of the 7000 plus emails generated by the group,
but it will be a massive task to glean the best.

Thanks to all for participating. I don't think my plane would have
stayed in the air half as long without the contributions of so many
group members. Keep 'em flying.

'Hi Mike,

You can't directly email the new member because I have intentionally
starred out his service provider. I will stop showing any portion of
the email address in future 'new member' posts to avoid this confusion.

Unlike most postings, I'm the 'sender', not the new member, so you
can't use the 'reply to sender' link. Instead, use 'reply to
group' (both these links are at the bottom of the email). Others might
be interested in the PT's anyway.

Awkward, I know, but the only alternative is to expose the new
member's email address to the world, for which I would not be thanked.
There aren't that many 'new member' posts.

Sorry for the confusion..

Dan
