Fuel Gauge and sender question (fairchild 24)

Post by jwm1801 »

'What is the replacement for sending unit and fuel gauges for a Fairchild 24 (1946 30 gal tanks). I have the original sending units (bad shape) but no gauges. Is there a modern day gauge and sending unit that will work. Any help would be greatly appreciated. JON'

'I was going through older messages on the site about fuel flow and gauge issues. Message #3313 a member talks about Stewart Warner gauges and senders that are available. I copied what was said;

Re: Fuel flow troubles

David,
I got the fuel valves from member, Jim Chybicki, I "think" he said
he had one set left. Phone (847) 530-4377.
Also got Stewart-Warner matching sender/gauge units, with the
senders being S/W pn F385-C, and the gauge S/W pn 82211.
I got these part numbers from other long time members.
They are a real hassle to install.... basically you're installing a
fuel tank sending unit designed to mount on top of the tank so,
being you're mounting them on the bottom, the float arm has to be
bent every which way to get the correct readings. I bent mine to
read "empty" with still 5 gals left per side. It's nice to have them
working, Of course "sticking" the tank is always the final word.
I say again, it is a hassle,

I wonder how well this gauge sender combination has worked?
If, Tom, from Hanford still frequents the forum maybe he can shed some light on this.

'Jim Long,

I installed the newer Stewart Warner gauges and sender in my 24. They work fine. I even took the glass off of the gauge and pasted a "Fairchild Pegasus" over the Stewart Warner logo. They look good and work well. Tom was correct in that they were designed to 'hang from the top' of the tank, and require a bit of work to bend the wire to get it to read right. It was a bunch of years ago, and I have mostly forgotten how I did it, but I feel that the results are worth it.
