Prop Hub Repair

Post by mileslong2k »

'Hello all,
I recently purchased a 6 bolt, small prop hub from eBay. It has some areas of pitting and rust. What propeller shops would be recommended for determining if this hub can be made serviceable? It was advertised as being "Serviceable" when I think they really meant that it was "Repairable". The price was right even for a wall hanger. Thanks in advance. I hope everyone on this forum has a Happy New Year in 2010.

'I've used both AC Propeller and Northwest Propeller in the Seattle area and
have no complaints with either. I had a hub done(inspected and replated) at
AC Propeller some years ago.

'I'm an A&P, IA & DAR with a lot of experience with wooden prop hubs.

First thing you need to do, is hold the hub by a string, then give it a light tap with a small steel hammer. If it rings clear like a bell, you most probably have a good hub. If it has a dull ring or thud, it's most likely cracked.

The second inspection is to have it magnafluxed. If you believe the hub rings nicely, a prop shop should be able to either magnaflux the hub & nut or recommend someone who can.

If it passes magneflux, then cleaning & re-plating comes next. The nicest is Type 1 or silver cadmium plating. The last time I tried to get this I didn't have any luck, due to the latest environmental laws, & had it zinc plated instead. Afterwards, the prop shop should do a dimentional check to make sure the plating isn't too thick.

Also make sure the face plate is 100% flat, or it will damage the wooden prop face.

If the hub is cracked, please use it as a bookend or decoration & don't resell it. If cracked you may have the experience of having the hub shatter in flight. The indication is the most horrible vibration you've ever experienced, followed by inflight separation, engine overspeed & an emergency landing. If the vibration is bad enough & you have internal stress in the engine mount, the entire engine can comlee off, which puts the plane off balance & uncontrolable.

I bought a hub for $700. once & it failed the NDT test. I was p***ed at the seller as he would let me test it without buying first, & that's not very nice.

Good Luck!
