'Darn nice link, Alan...thanks for that.

While on the YouTube site, Fairchild people might want to do a quick search on
Fairchild 42....yes, 42 not 24. There are three small movies on this very rare member
of our Fairchild family. There were only 7 ever made of this series. This one is owned
by the Chapman family in Wasilla, Alaska. This plane has almost everything in common
to my project, the Fairchild 51. Same empennage, same wing etc., but the 42's fuselage
sits four people in two rows of two just like a C 172. Mine sits one in front, two buckets
behind that and a bench for two behind that.

I finally found lift strut material for my project after agonizing for many months in a near
worldwide search. I was ready to set up tooling to roll my own, when just by chance I came
across a lad in Northern Ontario who sold me four NOS lift strut blanks from a Norseman.
They came with a little bit of surface rust inside and out, so I built up a tank 15' long by about
10" square and removed the rust via electrolysis. The solution was made up of washing
soda and water, a neg contact was put on the strut and a positive contact was put on three
lengths of rebar , one (isolated from the strut ) down the center of the strut and one on each
side of the strut. A 12v 12 amp battery charger was hooked up and in 36 hours the rust was
gone completely. I can even see the manufacturers part and batch numbers on the tubes.
Summerhill tube company, April 1946.
