Matt:
I have a few pieces of the fairings, at least good for patterns, including
, I guess, the lower sections of the strut fairings.
I need to take a look at them in the hangar. I will make pictures and
e-mail them to you then, if you wish.
This might happen on Wednesday.

[fairchildclub] Help with fairings ...
Afternoon guys ...
Could use some assistance on gear leg fairings ... When I bought my
24W46 it did not have the oleo strut fairngs installed. It turns out
that in my parts pile that I got with the plane, I have the two upper
sections but not the lowers. I am also missing the two removable
mounting brackets that go on each strut to secure the fairings.
I am basically looking for the lower sections of the strut fairings,
the mounts, a set of the intersection fairings from the gear leg to the
wheel pant and the small LE and TE fairings that go on the gear legs
where they intersect the fuse. I can fabricate these parts if need be
so I am open to anything... unserviceable used parts that I can use for
patterns, serviceable parts, drawings or paper patterns, loaners to use
as models.. whatever you have that might help me re-create these
missing pieces.
I would greatly appreciate any assistance.

'If you would send an E-mail directly to me, I can send back some photos. I have a full set of fairings, but they are a little the worst for wear, but a whole bunch better than nothing. Mine will need some dent removal, and a fair amount of body filler.

Thank you for the response Bob ... any photos or information would be helpful. It's begining to look like I will have to hand form these parts. I don't think there is much chance of finding serviceable ones for sale anywhere.
Thanks again for the information..

I don't know if I could be of much help. My fairings, all 4 pieces, are
still pretty much in semi original condition and not installed. I did, many
years ago, 35 to be exact, I saw the forms for the lower sections. They were
cast iron and matched the interior of the fairings. I think that they beat the
aluminum to form it to the shape of the form. Probably welded a wedge to the
lower front to fill in where the metal would have been split, in order to make
the curve outward and forward.
I can take pictures of what I've got, and look to see if the holes were
reinforced, at the holes on the inside, with steel, or what. I think that
Istill have some of the original brackets. Even those probably have been
repaired.

I'm a little disappointed ... Besides the generous Mr. Tom Downey, I
have not had a single other offer for help with my gear leg fairings
since posting my request. I was under the impression that this site
was the best avenue for sharing information and providing support to
other owners trying to preserve these wonderful classics. You can't
tell me that many others have not had to recreate these fairings
during their restorations?
Did I miss something? The iniation maybe?

'Regarding making a tracing of the lower fairing, what type of paper would you use. Poster paper? I think that only one tracing would be necessary. I am sure that the fairings are symetrical. I could give it a try, and just see how it comes out. Then roll it up and put it in a mailing tube.
I may be able to take some photos and overlay them on a grid for scaling purposes

Thanks for the assistance with the fairings. I do not have the cuff fairings that you sent photos of and will have to make them. Forming them is not a major problem but it would be nice to have patterns of them so that I can create the new ones to be as close to original as possible. I would almost have to make paper patterns and traces of the intersection profiles. Very difficult to do without having the actual part in your hands. Do you also have the lower section of the oleo strut fairnings? They have a nice flare that rests on top of the wheel pant. I have to make these as well. The only other pieces I am missing are the two small caps that cover the bolts at the leading and trailing edge of the gear leg where it attaches to the fuselage. Very easy pieces to pattern and make.
I don't know if I have any bearings ..if I do, I can't promise that they are not old and worn ...I'll just have to check. They appear to be standard tapered roller bearings and could probably be purchased from an industrial bearing supplier if you gave them the dimensions. With these old airplanes you can't always obtain "approved - aviation" parts. There are only a few bearing manufacturers in the world anyway .... most all quality bearings come from the same sources. Timken, Fafnir or NSK would be good.

Matt:
I related your fairing problem to the fellow who I am helping with
his and he said it would be OK for me to take some digital pictures
of ours. We have some but I havn't looked to see if we have all of
them. We may also have to make some from scratch. I remember that
there are welded seams where they go from convex to concave- which
shows they were made in halves and then welded. I think 3003 in
maybe 040 (?) might be possible. I;m not sure if a hardwood formblock
would help or if the roughing out and streaching would be better done
with a bad and mallet. we'll be learning as we go !
Thanks for looking for extra tail wheel parts. We may only need
a bearing if the hub is correct. I will send you a pic of the hub
with the fairings so you can see if it the same hub !

Re: Help with fairings ...
'The fairing that Matt & Patricia was looking for if the lower main gear strut fairing #43252, the one just below #43251. I have sent some photos & a tracing of the flat shape of the aluminum.
After really looking it over, it isn't really bad. The biggest thing that I have seen, it will cost about $500.00 for a "Sheet metal rotary machine" (Enco model # 130-5400) to make the 2 breaks of the aluminum on the back edges, unless to can find one to use for free. The flaring of the material at the bottom will be fun, but I don't think that I will have any problem. The upper fairing, should be a piece of cake in comparison.
I have two project ahead of that, (MGB motor overhaul & stabilizer reman.) actually more like 20 projects, before I try it.
