'OK guys! Upon checking through my F-24 manuals, I found the Fairchild 24 used a Navy N-22 airfoil; but I'm still looking for coordinates for this airfoil. I'm checking internet sites on airfoils now.
I volunteered to help an F24 friend and will be doing some wing repair. I have been searching the CD for the info and found the rib 4443 that needs the TLC, but would like to know the airfoil number to check against the ploted drawing. Is there anyone out there with this info?
Thanks

Re: Some Fairchild wing data found.
'I think that you won't find what you are looking for, as Clark Y or N-22. It is going to be something between the basic airfoil and wing tip. The only part of that rib that looks anywhere normal to my eyes, is the area aft of the rear spar. If you look at 44254 (Butt rib) and 44185 (Fuel tank area), the chord line is pretty close to the bottom of the ribs. When you get out to 4443, you can see that the bottom of that rib is maybe 1/2" (at the front spar) above the chord line. ie the wing has started to taper somewhere slightly inboard of the 4443 rib.
Also what I don't see in the drawing, the doublers on the top & bottom cap strips show no indication that they are tapered. See the nose of the 44254 rib on the CD. There it indicates tapering.

Re: Some Fairchild wing data found.
'Hi Bob
I see what you mean. The wing appears to taper gradually. I may have to pull dimensions from a good rib to get the info. One thing still bothers me though. It appears that all the rib drawings lack verticle coordinate data. This makes me think the info I need, must reside on another drawing. Maybe a drawing of airfoils.

Re: Some Fairchild wing data found.
'Idea. I some of the old bi-fold computer paper. How about laying the rib down on some of that paper and trace everything out. I just remembered that I only have one of the original 4443 ribs. I'll check, but I think that the doubler to the top & bottom cap strips are located on the outboard side of the rib. I didn't see anything on the drawing about that.
I looked at my wings. The rear spar on the bottom has no taper, the top of the rear spar is only slightly tapered (maybe 1/8"). The front spar, where the rib sits, there is quite a bit of taper, but that doesn't matter. The bottom of the rib sits tight to the underside of the spar. What I've seem on the top of the spar to the top of the rib, they just put shims (scraps) in there to take up what space may remain.
Assuming the wing tip is in place, I would build the rib, but leave the gussets off around where the cap strips cross the spars.
You could do a diagonal cut to the cap strips (7:1 ratio) where it crosses over and under the spar, thus turning the rib into 3 pieces. Put the nose section in first, then the tail section, and slide the center into place. Glue everything together with new gussets. I'm sure that your gussets will need to be something thicker than the original 1/16" plywood. 1/8" may be acceptable.
Just an idea. What do you think?

Re: Some Fairchild wing data found.
'I made a measurement of the rib I thought to be the #4443. It looks like it is. The doublers that are on the top & bottom cap strips, are in the inboard side of the rib. The nose is slightly different than what is drawn. Maybe 1 1/2" is lopped off and the front piece butts directly into the wing tip bow. The tip bow terminate directly into the side of the next rib inboard of the #4443. I measured the rib that I have and it told me that the rear portion of the front spar should be 5.5" high, and that is exactly what the drawing specifies.

'Hi Bob
I've been on vacation for a week. Sorry I couldn't get back to you sooner. That sounds like the correct rib. I hope to create a full size plot of the rib drawing this week and maybe we can figure out why they differ, and also make some airfoil height measurements. You can reach me at rseifert@socal.rr.com
Thanks
