new member + new to F-24's

'My mane is Tim. I am helping a friend restore his 1934 F-24 c8c. He
is a very
experienced pilot and restorer but neither of us had any prior
experience with Fairchilds. We have started blasting and priming the
fuse, that's going pretty well. I was hoping yall might enlighten us
on some details which may be particular to F-24's.
We are taking off everything we can before blasting. We were last
working on taking out the floorboards and sticks. He mentioned he
couldn't figure out how to diconnect the two horizonal interconnect
shafts which connect the rudder pedals. He said something about the
mechanism had the bolt blocked on one end and there was something
obstructing on the other end too. Is there a "secret trick" to this
part ????? We'd love not to get blast media in the bushings there !
Also he was wondering who yall might reccomend to do good quality
work overhauling the landing gear strut hydraulic shocks and what kind
of fluid was used ?

His engine has it's oregional warner 145 and seems to be in very good
low time condition but has been sitting for many years (50+) but no
rust anywhere- stored in a airtight containers- but it will be getting
overhaul eventualy. It has a stromberg carb model NAR-5. It has
a heat exchaanger on the bottom for the exhaust/cabin heat(?) but
we don't seem to have whatever bolts onto that!
Could anyone supply a picture of that area so we might be able to see
the parts we need to find ? Also if anyone knows of an exhaust for
sale - he'd be interested !

We are now researching the wood stringers. Do yall know if anybody
makes duplicated of fairchilds? or does everybody just use modern
style with the big hump ( like aircraft spruce's ) We are considering
making our own from fir. (?)

Tim,
I have sorted out the rudder shaft details on my 24-c8c project (S/N
2683). You will find that the rudder pedal shafts are mounted on
ball bearings so you definitely do not want blast medium in them.
The way to remove the shafts is to remove the right and left bolted
on bearing brackets then pull the shafts from the bearings mounted on
the welded brackets. Reverse the procedure in the proper (suitable)
sequence to re-install the shaft assemblies. Hope this helps.

Tim,
I should have added that the rudder pedal shaft removal/re-
installation procedure is a very tedious operation but very doable.
Or you can seal up the openings during blasting and leave the shafts
installed.

'Check my web page, I can epair most of the things you talked about.

Finishing up on a 7 year restoration of NC19143, a 37-G.

I now have the tools and equipment for trueing the 10" hayes wheels,
and replacing the brake drums.

Al Holloway at Holloway engineering at Quincy Ca. is the best place
to have the 145 rebuilt.

the stringers can be manufactured easy I used my router and a
fixture I made (see the web page)

I've been in direct contact with the owner, Nice folks, they live in an airport community, and have a few old projects. SInce I live a few miles away, My partner Bob and I are going out to see them in a day or 2. Will report if there is anything worth saving. The wings, Horz. & Vert. Stabs and all wood is scrap, not even sure you can get patterns from them. You can see in the pictures on the web link.
Owner currently does not want to piece the plane out, I tried getting some pieces already.

Welcome to the wonderful world of rebuilding a Fairchild.  You'll be surprised at what you can do once you set your mind to do it.  We, partner Jim and myself, have been amazed at what we can do.  I'll send you some pictures of how we have progressed, but would recommend you do your own stringers.  We bought the first set to go on the belly, and, by dumb luck, it worked out better because they are much stronger than the ones we made.  We have a local (Chicago) lumber dealer who stocks Sitka Spruce, so that's where we've purchased all of our lumber.  He's been very good to drag out most of his supply for us when we go in to purchase.  The stringers for ours were cut from a 17' x7 1/2" x2 1/2' piece of Spruce.  Cut to size, router, plane, sand and varnish.  Figure about 3-4 hours per stringer. 
Rudder pedals come out as a unit after floor boards come out.  Good luck and let us know if we can assist you further.  Where abouts are you located?
