The only schematic I've ever come across for the rudder idler
station is in the 1944 Airplane Parts Catalog for Army models UC-61A
and UC61K. I've taken this station apart innumerable times trying to
get it to operate in a smooth fashion without wild angles and
stresses on cables and steering cable connections. Now this is just
my opinion, and Lord knows I'm nobody, but I feel the schematic is
very misleading. While basically correct as far as components, it
tends to make you believe the left idler goes on top which just
will not work smoothly. I mounted mine on the bottom. The left idler
cable connections as shown work well, but the right idler
connections is another gray area. I've found the right side
connections are just the opposite of the left idler as far as which
cable mounts on top and which mounts on the bottom. Also the
drawing does not show a couple of washers used on the center
aluminum bushing to help take up the play in this unit after it's
mounted in place. The bushing is also a tad longer in one direction
from it's center collar than the other, I mounted the longer side
down. Anyway, try it, then you decide. You won't hear me saying this
is absolutely correct, and that it's the way they intended, but I am
well satisfied the way the unit operates.
