'Bob.

Use the light weight un-certified fabric on the wood. In time ,the
finish over just the varnish will open up with the grain of the wood
and require a refinish job again.

Thanks for the info. That was exactly what happened to the old stab, which basically ruined it. Don't want to go through this process again.
