Horizontal Stabilizer Drawing

Post by Seifert »

'Does anyone on our list have a readable drawing for the Fairchild 24 Horizontal Stabilizer Assembly, part number 4624. I have the CD copy but the dimensions are unreadable. I have the capability to electronically reconstruct or recreate these old drawings but I do need a readable print to start with. If nothing is available through the club, I plan to order it from the NASM archives. Naturally I will donate anything usable to the club for the CD.

'I have two different drawings for the stabilizer. Neither are that great. One is in the UC-61 manual and the other in the civilian manual. The part numbers don't see to match very well. I am working up to the point to where I can re-skin both the top and bottom.

Just remembered, I'll need your web address. I have the page for the stabilizer in my computer right now.

'Hi Bob
Thanks for the offer of the stablizer drawings. Are you referring to the stabilizer illustrations in the manuals or do you have dimensioned drawings? I am looking for dimensioned Fairchild construction drawings.
My horizontal stabilizer looks like swiss cheese after the termites left. I will have to start over completely with it. Many of the parts are not even usable as templates. I am measuring and creating drawings of everything as I disassemble it, but would feel better if I could bounce those dimensions against the factory construction drawings. The effort I put into the documentation will go far in case the FAA gets too interested in this repair. I hope your stabilizer is in much better shape.
I'm not sure I understand what you mean by web address. I don't have a web site setup yet. I've been using CD's and DVD's to transfer files and was planning to send (Fairchild Club) Jamie Trent, a CD when I get a few more drawings cleaned up. I takes several days to clean up some of these drawings. I worked two weeks cleaning up the Fin Assembly Drawing and used it to re-build and re-skin (re.. repair) mine.
Keep them flying.

'Yes, all I have are the drawings that are in the old UC-61 manual and the civilian manual. Plus what is on the CD. The first thing that I have seen is that the P/N on the 4 stabilizer mounting brackets don't match the book. Mine have 24-4648-1, in small stamp style on all 4, and in a larger stamp style, -10 on the rear, and -20 on the front. The only thing that straightened me out, was the rear mounts had one small hole each, one on the left side, and one on the right side. This was where the ground bonding strap tied into the mounts.

One thing that I noticed was the cable length that was shown in the UC-61 manual P/N 42376-2 had each cable as 139 1/8". My old ones were 138" (civilian) That really didn't surprise me much.

Where I stand at present, I'm checking the cables and rigging of the elevator trim and the fit of all of the mounting brackets. I will clean up the fittings and replace the hardware, then re-skin both sides.

The interior looks good, the 1/16" plywood looks a bit rough. I should have the plywood off one side or the other fairly soon, and can make any measurements that you may have concern with. Or just measure everything.
