gear fluid

Post by Buhwana »

'For those who know. On the PT-19 what is the fluid that is used to
service the landing gear struts. The maintenance video i have (from
WWII) say a vegetable based oil similar to what is used in the braking
system but my fluid in the struts doesn't look red?

'Dot 5 (silicone based) seems to be the fluid of choice. Dot 3 will
work too, but all the problems with Dot 3 come along with it(moisture
absorption, paint damage, etc.)

'On the landing gear struts years ago I switched to silicone motorcycle shock
fluid which come in three

Different viscosities, no problems with leaks or seeping and it keeps the
aircraft from bouncing.

On a rough field. BH

'If there have been no modifications, ie, seals stc,
the landing gear struts on PT-19's; 23's, etc, use
plain ole automotive brake fluid as well as the brake
system.

'You might use 5606 but Deere Hydraulic fluid also does a great job and doesn't get sticky. Be careful with the bladder brakes. Some rubber is formulated for automotive and some for 5606. Had a bladder melt and lock a wheel at Oshkosh due to using 5606 when he should have used automotive.
