'Wasn't there one made for the duster version years ago? There is one that showed up at Midland painted in Jap markings and a radial with cowling with the metal wing. Can't remember the name of the mod....

'Both Weatherly, and Funk built aluminum wings for the PT's when using
them as cropdusters. They were not built to the same dimensions/chord
as the wooden Fairchild wing though....

How much money are you willing to spend on this?

1- Engineering
2- Materials/Construction
3- Getting the FAA to buy it (unless you just want to put
them on and go fly)

'It might be simpler and not as expensive as you'd think if you can find a
motivated engineer. About four years ago I had a severe lack of concentration
and played with the idea of building my Fairchild 51 wings in aluminium just
for the experience. An engineer in Montreal did up the design for me for $1,000.

If building wings from scratch, I'd bet they could be built faster in aluminum, would
be a little heavier and depending where you get materials, they might be less expensive
than wood.

I came to my senses though for reasons of authenticity, not to mention the beautiful
shape of the 51's wing.

Just a thought, it might be a way to save some of the planes that have
been grounded for problems with the wing, I've seen a PT-19 wing being
restored, beautiful woodwork but a lot more actual work than building
an aluminum wing.'
