Re: Jasaco Alternator

'Anybody have any experience with the Jasco alternator/voltage
regulator? Mine stopped working and is low time since
installation in 2000. My mechanic wants to play the "replace parts
until problem fixed" game. I'd prefer to isolate problem and fix or
rebuild, if possible. Any help would be appreciated as I sure would
like to get this fixed before flying to Sun-n-Fun. Thanks. - gary'

I wish I had a nickel for every time I have heard this story They
only way to fix this problem is to replace parts. I have dealt with
these alot. There are two choices. 1. send both regulator and
alternator to JASCO for overhaul. 2 buy a new alternator and
regulator. If it was working you more than likely dont have a
installation problem. I have found two things that cause them
problems. You have to follow the manufacturers operating
instructions to the "T" every time. Another common problem is a low
or dead battery. If you have to jump-start the airplane. As soon as
you turn on the alternator it senses a low battery and tries to
charge it as fast as it can. This takes out the diodes and the rest
is history. I maintain a few airplanes with JASCO alternators, and
some with generators. In the last 5 years I havnt touched a
generator. But I have changed 3 alternators. One owner keeps a
spare. I have no idea why or how but the JASCO regulator and
alternator are a matched set. And I have seen fist hand that mixing
sets isn't a good idea. It may work or you might be paying for
your overhaul and the guy who's regulator you borrowed to help
troubleshoot your problem. In conclusion my best advice is to put
the generator back on.'

How could I forget COOLING. They also have problems if they dont
get enought air for cooling. I am sure I am forgetting somthing but
its still early for me.

'Don't forget, at least on a Ranger, they put out a huge magetic field that
makes the front cockpit compass useless while the alternator is running.
