Fairchild 24 cruise speeds
'Hello everyone, this is my first post on here.
I am thinking of buying a long nose Fairchild 24, and am trying to
better understand what cruise speed to expect with the 200hp Ranger
engine. Searching on the internet I've found a ranges all the way
from 97knots to 124knots... which is quite a big difference!
I assume some of the difference is due to some people using the
aeromatic prop. Do any folks have constant speed props fitted to the
F24?
Can anyone tell me what their actual 75% cruise speed is, using what
engine / prop combination?
Is it possible to get 124knots cruise out of a F24? (This information
from Tradeaplane's published specs)'

downhill with a brick and a safe tied onto it.
Mine does 105-110 mph in cruise at +/- 2000 msl when lightly loaded.
But I think I have one weak cylinder which I'll address next annual.

'Don,
I have a '46 F-24 with a 200 Ranger and an 86/61 Sensenich prop. It
indicates about 118 cruising at 2100 RPM which is pretty well confirmed with
a GPS showing about 100 KTS. I do have wheel pants, but I don't have the
gear strut fairings installed. I understand the round tubes are quite
draggy compared
to the streamlined fairing, but I don't know. I never had them on it.
My engine is pretty good with about 50 SMOH on it.

Re: Fairchild 24 cruise speeds
'My F24R46A with 200 HP Ranger and Sensenich fixed pitch prop sees 115 mph as top cruise speed. The prop is one or two degrees in favor of climb as opposed to a straight cruise prop. Don't remember the exact pitch but could check. Comfortable plane. Any headwind knocks the numbers down right away. There's a lot hangin' out in the breeze.....

Fairchild 24 cruise speeds
'Interesting-? Forward flight and max airspeed may just be limited by airfoil
design-? We have the 220 Continental on our 46 F24 and it will ONLY fly at
115 cruise-? Seriously considering a wooden prop to replace the Ground
adjustable - ??
any thoughts you all-?

Re: Fairchild 24 cruise speeds
'I flew four F-24R's before I bought my current project airplane and
found that most of them cruised around 110-115 MPH (not knots)
indicated at relatively low altitude (2500-3500 MSL). My gut feeling
was that they would true out slightly better around 4000-5000 MSL,
but I never ran any kind of test on this. I did get the opportunity
to fly in one really light F-24R with a Hartzell adjustable pitch
prop (variable pitch, not constant speed) and it was about 5-10 mph
faster at low altitude than the other airplanes I had flown.
That being said, the 5-10 mph difference between the propeller types
isn't really significant. The F-24 is SLOW by any modern standard
and no matter what you do with the prop and engine, it will never
become FAST in the modern sense of the word. I picked an Aeromatic
prop with new Tarver blades for my airplane because I wanted to
travel with it without having to be unduly concerned about high
density altitudes during the summer months. I've long since accepted
that the $4k+ investment in a really neat prop will never pay for
itself in speed, but it might buy a little peace of mind when it's
105 degrees in the Texas Hill Country (about 2500' ASL) and I want to
pack up my bags and fly home. In the mean time, I'm looking forward
to enjoying the stable, classy ride; albeit at a leisurely cruise
speed.
It's a nice trade off and I hope you'll pick a slow Fairchild over a
nearly slow Spam Can.

Re: Exhaust gaskets
'Harry,
Contact Fresno air parts they have them you will need
both of the gaskets The ones for the exhaust manifold and the one for the
cylinder. They are not the same.
