'Hello the group,
I have a 440-c5 engine in my Great Lakes replica. The engine
originally was installed in a Grumman Widgeon and was not fitted
with an air cleaner, merely a plenum and mixing box for carb heat.
Anyway, I hope the group can help me modify this installation for a
typical F24R airbox. I have the airbox (thanks Joe), and carb
elbow.
What I'm finding is that the forward face of the airbox is a good,
but not great fit to the inside of the nose bowl. Specifically, the
upper right corner of the airbox overlaps the recessed ring of the
nosebowl (that surrounds the prop shaft). The result is a gap about
big enough to stick my finger into. I have no reason to believe my
nosebowl was not also off the Grumman. I wish I could include a
picture but I'm not smart enuf with the group to post one yet. I
can't find an F24 or PT anywhere near me to examine closely.
My questions are:
- What, if anything, is installed between the nosebowl and the face
of the airbox to act as an antichafe seal in a typical F24
installation?
- What kind of fasteners are used to secure the airbox to the
nosebowl...rivets, SS screws w/locknuts, SS screws with tinnerman
nuts?
- is SCAT tubing used to connect the box to the elbow or some other
type of ducting?
I hope between the Great Lakes and Grumman background the group will
still help me out.
Thanks in advance.
Mike Danielle'

In my case, its a piece of large diameter reinforced rubber hose> - is SCAT tubing used to connect the box to the elbow or some other

'Thanks for the reply, Dan. I'm hangared at Roseburg, OR (KRBG)
There's gotta be some Fairchilds between me and Portland, but I
haven't seen any yet. Your info helps. I'm a little troubled with
the gap at the top right of the airbox but I doubt there's much hot
air that could come in there...at least not enough to notice a
problem during the summer. I think the Grumman nosebowl differs
from the Fairchild in that the Grumman has a protrusion around the
prop shaft opening. I'll take my camera tomorrow and get a few
shots.

Re: Nosebowl modification
'Heck, I'll give a try, too! My airbox is connected directly to the bowl.
Don't recall seeing any material between the two. Screws hold it if I recall but
I don't know what is on the backside (locknut or?). Heck, now I'm wondering
if they are really rivets. Can't recall. Sorry! But anyway....I've got the
large diameter rubber"ish" hose type material connecting the box to the elbow,
too. Now here's a little additional info. I have a Grumman nose bowl since
one of my spare engines came from a Grumman installation. If I recall, the
diameter of the nose cowl opening through which the crank passes is somewhat
larger than the F24 or PT openings. That may be the reason you have the disconnect
in the upper corner where your air box is failing to mate up with the bowl (if
I understood your description correctly). But, (here comes the good part)
the New England Air Museum (NEAM) in Windsor Locks, Connecticut (They have a
website somewhere...may be under NEAM) has a Great Lakes with a Ranger engine
mounted on the nose. You may be able to contact them and trade e-mail with one
of their volunteers who just might be able to walk out to the display area and
check out the installation for you. The plane was built / restored by a
fellow named Bob Carlson if I recall that part correctly. Believe he donated it to
the museum.
Good Luck!

Re: Nosebowl modification
'Sorry,, after rereading my e-mail it almost sounds like I've got the Grumman
bowl mounted on my 24. It isn't. It is really just a spare sitting on the
shelf. I was only noting the larger diameter hole of the raised area as was
pointed out. That's why I thought the NEAM Great Lakes would be of interest to you.

Re: Nosebowl modification
'Thanks James. Steve Kretsinger brought his beautiful F24 down to Roseburg
the other day and I got a good look at the outside. I'll go visit him with
a screwdriver to look at the inside soon. Thanks for the offer anyway.
