Anybody know...

Post by Tom Mueller »

'Hey group!
Anybody know what an anti-howl strip is, or even looks like? I see
it mentioned in the old manuals. I'm pretty noisy when i put the
flaps out. Even the cows look up at me on final.

Its an aluminum strip that seals the flap-wing slot when the flaps are
down and keeps cows from getting stiff necks.

If you have the Fairchild CD, it is the "Closure Strip, Flap Gap",
drawing 44239.

And youre not alone — many airliners howl as their flaps extend. I
hear it frequently, living under the ORD 27L arrival path. No cows
nearby, fortunately.

'I fly a 727 and it makes a neat sound when it's dirty. Flaps 30 and
gear down, all the flaps and LED's kind of sing and dance out in the
breeze. I don't know if anyone can really hear it above the engine
noise, but it's a neat sound, just the same. I hope my Fairchild does
something similar, it would be nice if it was as rackety as the old
Boeing I fly for a living.'
