F24 Colors

Post by higgshunter »

'Hi folks,

Just brought my new F24R project home and I'm already wondering
about a few things. My F24R looks like it was originally yellow
with green trim. According to the manual, the colors are called
Loeing Yellow and Stinson Green. I've looked in the Wicks and
Aircraft Spruce catalogs for these colors and can not find them.
Does anyone know what shade these colors are? Painting my project
is a long ways down the road, but I'm just wondering what this color
scheme looks like with real paint.

Thanks,

Bill'

'Bill:

My airplane was also yellow with green trim (until now) and in
looking at my logs, I can't find any manufacturer's color numbers or
other guidance on correct tint / shading. The yellow airplanes I've
seen were all about the same shade of yellow, but I've seen some
variation in the greens, so perhaps finding that absolutely perfectly
original color is going to be a challenge.

I also thought all the yellow airplanes I've seen were very nice, but
I like "arrest me" red better, so that's what I'm going with. Trim
color is going to be cream or ivory, with a correct Lowrey mask.

How was the trip home? Did you take time out to go over to Mike's
and look at my airplane?

Best Wishes,

'Interesting to see the talk about colors. A lot of airplane companies
used fairly standard colors and named them to suit. For example,
Stearman Vermillion, Taylorcraft Red and Aeronca Red are all the same
color. I had a lot of fun (not) trying to track this stuff down for
my Rearwin and found that Randolph still had Stearman Vermillion on
their special order list. Pity they were so useless to deal with, it
only took ten months to get he stuff.

I found lots of searching on Google eventually got me the answers I
needed as to which colors were which. I am sure that with some
digging you will get a useable cross-reference and be able to order
the right stuff.

It was worth it in the end on the Rearwin as it is now in the same
colors it had in 1939 when it left the factory.

'Hi Brad,

I was delayed getting out of Chicago by 2 hours last Friday (20
Aug.), and was running behind schedule all day. Sorry to say I did
not get over to see your F24. I can definitely say that a F24 will
fit comfortably into a 24 ft. UHaul truck. I left Alan's at 5 PM
Friday and arrived back in Chicago at 9:30 AM Saturday morning.
Other than feeling like being in a paint shaker for 15 hours, the
trip home was uneventful. Got the F24 unloaded late Saturday
afternoon. Now the fun begins! It will take me a month to get
organized to the point where I can start to do real work. I'll the
group posted on the progress.

My F24 appears to originally be Loening Yellow with Stinson Green
trim. At this point I am not sure if I will keep the original
colors. What I want to do is get samples of the original colors and
spray some on test pieces to see what it looks like. If what I have
at the moment is any indication, I am definitely leaning towards a
red with cream trim paint scheme, but then again, it will be a long
time before I have to make that decision.

'Hello Harry,

Yes, the landing gear was removed and it was still a tight fit
getting the "out riggers" through the door. Also, the engine was
removed, but that was not an issue as the truck length would have
easily accomodated the fuselage with the engine. I would be
surprised if a F24 would not fit into a container for over sea
delivery. I can take measurements of my 24 if you need some
dimensions.

All the best,

Bill Kahl

'Hi Bill
Thanx for the info.My reason for asking is I plan to
put my F24R9 on the market early next year, maybe
sooner.
Another subject you might have some info on.FAA
records show 24 1939 F24's active.My 24 is a standard
model versus Deluxe or military,I have been unable to
find out how many of the 24's are Standard
model's.Would appreciate any info on this matter.

'Harry: If you're thinking about shipping your F-24 somewhere in an
ocean container, they come in several sizes (I have a shipping
background and have gone through this before). A 20' container might
work if you remove the engine, but I think before you put all the
peices of the airplane into the container, you are going to run out
of space. The next size up is a 40' container, which would be amply
large. As long as you don't ship the battery and drain all fuel,
oil, and hydraulic fluid from the airplane and engine, you don't have
to worry about declaring Hazardous Materials, which adds to the
expense and hassle of the shipment. You will also want to spend some
time securing the airplane and parts inside the container. Ocean
containers get ROUGH handling on their journey and anything that is
loose or can become loose is going to be a missle inside that
container. Which leads to my last suggestion, which is to insure
your shipment for a generous amount. Call or e-mail me if you end up
shipping the airplane and I'll be glad to help out where I can, I
still have some contacts in that business and they're always eager to
help when it comes to old airplanes.

Best Wishes,

'Harry,
if you ship a F24 in a container you have to load the fuselage in at a angle
With the triangular outriggers it is too wide. you have to build a jig to
carry the fuselage.
