F-24 Wings

Post by Tom Downey »

'I removed my old covers and found that the leading edges are metal.

It this normal?

I have always seen plywood, any one else have aluminum sheet stock
on their wing leading edges?

'Tom,

So far for me, 1940 and above has always been plywood.

'Tom,
I restored mine in 1980. There were plywood leading edges on the wings
and I replaced with new plywood. Never heard of metal leading edges on
Fairchilds.

'Tom:

My wings are currently uncovered and also have plywood leading edges
(very impressive quality and fit, by the way). If you'd like
detailed pictures of them, let me know as I am going to be working on
the airplane much of next week and will have plenty of opportunities
to get some close-up pictures.

Best Wishes,

'Tom: Pics will be headed your way Thursday or Friday. In the mean
time, if you need detailed information about the leading edge skins,
you might want to call the guy that is doing my restoration - Mike
Redpath - at (405) 408-0190. He does really good wood work and can
either tell you how to make the leading edges or build you a set,
whatever you like. As I said, his work is top quality and his prices
are reasonable.

I really do want to thank you for the help, but have a look at my
site. http://www2.whidbey.net/nc19143/index.htm you will see that I
have pretty much built a new F-24, I am not the world authority on
Fairchild but I know you guys are. So that is why I ask questions.

I'll build new leading edges too

thanks for the help.'

'Tom:

Just finished checking out your site. Your site and your airplane
are great! Sorry I didn't have this knowledge earlier.

When do you think you will fly?

Best Wishes,
Brad'

I am hoping this summer, but,, this is a hobby with me, IT seems
like every thing else gets better priority.

My alloted Space at my server is full, or you would see every thing
I have completed.
Landing gear is complete, fuselage is 90%, all
flight controls are recovered, ready to go, so the wings are next.

Any one got tricks for getting the old varnish off the little sticks?'
