'Alan,

Your already looking at TBO.

Per Book Page 40, 1940 addition:

Warner TBO for Cylinders: 250 to 600hrs

Warner TBO for Bottom end: 600 hrs

TBO times above will depend on maintenance, usage, heating, cooling. All the
factors a engine care.

RANGER:

Ranger/TBO for Cylinders: 250 hrs

Ranger/TBO for Bottom end: 500 hrs

TBO times above will depend on maintenance, usage, heating, cooling. All the
factors a engine care.

I have seen both Ranger and Warners go considerably beyond TBO. Take my
Ranger, 800hrs since new 1944. Never had cylinder off. Also know some Ranger
bottom ends going for 2000 hrs.

You will need to take the TBO times into consideration when making your
purchase. The latest price from Radial Engines Inc. is $22,000 for a
complete overhaul.

A replacement SMOH Warner 165 or 185 will run between $22,000 and $33,000
without accessories.

Buck Hubert has one for sale SMOH, $22,000. Or another for $18,500 with full
package that will require complete teardown for insp due to old major. You
will have about $10,000 in overhaul charges. The one with out accessories,
plan on another $7,000.

I just arranged for a Warner 185J for $32,500, no delivery, partial
accessories only.

Now that I scared you!!!!

'Alan,

Easy on the engine parts, hard on the landing gear and useful load. Legal
two place with 1/2 fuel. Single seat with full fuel and light baggage. Keep
finding landing gear universals cracked from the loads.

220 Cont makes it worse.

'In the Ranger book. That is military recommendations.

Military is always low. My Ranger has 800 hrs and never been touched since
1943, out of the Navy Crate.

A question is? What was the Navy doing with Rangers?

'Hey Jamie! I'm putting new tires on your ride and I think I
have the oil consumption problem covered. I'm still concerned about the
starter clutch torque
setting. According to the data plate it is set at 102.9.
It should be at least 200 ft lbs. I am checking all the local sources
for a spare so I can send this
one out. Still looking for a tach cable for the front seat
on the 19, strange no body seems to know just how long it should be.
For your information, the
engine that was in my 19 since 1943 had 1900 hours on when I
swapped it out, It will now power a replica Fokker in a inverted
configuration with a new
top end.
