'My local GADO recently made me aware of a great deal now available from
the FAA: all your aircraft records recorded on a CD ROM. You can print
copies of whatever you need from the CD.

The cost: $5 (and that includes shipping)

That's pretty hard to beat.

You can order online. I found the web site very confusing, so let me
step you through the process:

Go to:

http://diy.dot.gov/

click on Federal Aviation Administration

click on "View by FAA region"

click on "Civil Aviation Registry"

click on "Aircraft Certificates"

click on "Request for copies of Aircraft Records"

fill in the request form.... you'll need your aircraft N number, model,
and serial number

Make your credit card payment (your browser must be capable of 128 bit
secure transactions)

It is a great deal at $5, but some of us were able to beat it: As a
special offer, you could order it for free at Oshkosh in 2002!

For the uninitiated:

You get a CD that contains two Acrobat files. One has images of every
registration form sent in for the airplane. The other has images of
every airworthiness-related form. The latter includes any 337s, the
original factory weight and balance and operating limitations data,
certification conformance, etc. Also shown are Aircraft Inspection
Reports, which I had not heard of — apparently they were submitted to
the FAA at each annual inspection and show airframe and engine hours.
The last submitted for my 24 was in 1956.

It is interesting to trace the chain of ownership over the years,
especially so in my case since the logs prior to 1968 were lost.
Through a search on the web, I discovered the original owner of my
plane, an FBO in Massachusetts, is still in business. I must fly it
back "home" to show them some day.
