'Hi Jamie-
Got the oil tank home from the airport, will take a
picture tonight, I also have a set of metal wheel
pants. Never used on the UC-61, so if you still want
them, I have a set, possibly have the cuffs as well...

F24R tail wheel oleo disassembly?

Post by danMichael »

'Fellow Fairchilders:

Can someone who has disassembled the tail wheel oleo on their late
model 24 give me some help? The manuals state the sequence for
disassembly, but it is not clear to me how to follow their directions.
Specifically, the first step is to "remove locking pin housing
[43203]," but I havent figured out how to remove it. There doesnt seem
to be any fastener or threads and it doesnt seem to want to come free
upon pulling or light tapping. It seems to be securely attached to the
piston ram tube. Doesnt the cam and attachment fitting [43210] need to
be removed first? Im sure someone who has done this can set me
straight.

Thanks in advance.

Post by danMichael »

'Although I havent been able to disassemble the strut yet, I have
already discovered that the oleo spring is broken. Does anyone have a
spare or source?

Thanks.

'In case some one else hasn't replied to you E-mail.
Remove 43210 - Cam and Attachment fitting.
Remove 43203 - Pull the roller to the rear and lift off the locking pin
housing. The pin that locks the tail wheel for steering is all that is
holding the housing in place.
Remove 43206 - Remove the 4 screws holding the bronze cap in place, and
remove the cap.
Remove the fork from the lower end of the strut, and you can pull the entire
guts of the strut out the top.
If you need some of the parts for the top of the strut, I have some that are
not needed any longer.
43203 (complete), 43210, 43206, 43212-2.

'I don't know if you have the F-24 CD, but on the drawing #43212 it mentioned
the rivets that hold the splines in place. If you expand the drawing, you
will see that the rivets are flat head rivets, and they go from the inside
of the strut to the outside. Then the bucked portion of the rivets are
rounded off.
