Tail Wheel Shimmy

'Hi Group,

I got this from a friend and it is from the Cub Club Newsletter #116 - May/June issue to give proper credit.

With the constant mention of F-24 tail wheel shimmy problems it looks to me like the answer would be to move the fuselage drag link fittings further forward as there is nothing that can be bent in our system. I had started to research a bit on the caster angle problem, but this gentleman has done all the work for me.

I don't know if this will come through as it is a jpeg. If not I will send it to John and see if he can get it in a sendable condition. I haven't got may scanner all figured out yet.

problem. I haven't talked to him in a few years, but I believe he is on this

'We set up a golf cart with a generator and welder but never had to use it.

I think we took a couple of items up to their booth, though. The Gas torch set was donated by their Harris division. They have been very supportive. Unison (Slick) just donated a plug cleaner and pressure tester for our use.

Did you ever pull it apart and redo the tubing?

'Your best bet would be to search the group archive .. there has been a great deal of discussion on this topic over the years. I think just about every 24 owner has experienced this problem at one time or another. If you haven't you probably will. I limit my hard surface operations just because I know it can happen at any time, and allowing it to shake just wears the assembly more and exacerbates the problem. I am thankful that I can fly off of grass 95% of the time. At my last annual I worked on reducing the side to side play of the tailwheel trailing link. The mounting tabs on the fuselage become elongated and the through bolt will wear quickly where it contacts the tabs because there is very little surface area. This helped a lot in my case but the biggest issue is the internal wear on the splines of the telescoping strut. This is a difficult fix but there are some guys out there repairing them. I have also noticed that the tire inflation makes a
difference. It seems that higher tire pressue has less tendency to shake. Landing technique can also help. Wheel landings while holding the tail up as long as possible and then having the rudder centered (if possible) when setting the tail down minimizes the issue. Plus you are at the lowest possible speed so the shaking intensity and duration is minimized. There are a number of owners on here that can help so you should receive some valuabe feedback.

'My 24W has adjustable caster brackets. This airplane flew for many years with fabracated one out of tubing and plate and I made new ones out of 4130 also cad plated. They can be seen in the photo section. akmacon.
