'My son posted pictures and comments about the F-24 that I flew, today. It
is the one that Jim Clow owned and was sitting in a hangar, at the Morris,
Illinois airport (C09). Gene Littlefield did the inspection so that I could
return it to service. It is a 1938 model with flaps and a Ranger engine. I
also bought a 1939 F-24 from Jim about a year ago that I am attempting to
rebuild. It has a Jacobs 225 hp and no flaps. I am having the wings
rebuilt by a friend, in Minnesota.
I got 2 hours of dual today to satisfy the insurance company. I
have been flying for 60 years but have not flown a taildragger in about 35
years so you know I have a lot to re-learn, especially when, today, we had a
10-12 knot crosswind from 90 deg on runway 36. The airplane performed very
well. I have a Bellanca Super Viking and a C-150 so I think that the 150
will have to go on the selling block.
Thank those that commented on my find.'

Re: New, to me. F-24
'Robert,
Congratulations on getting it flying again. It is a GREAT airplane. I
believe that the K model is the first of the 'four place' Fairchild 24s. It
is the last of the 'short nosed' Fairchilds, cause the following year, they
converted to a 'removable engine mount' and added 9 or 11 inches to the
length (moved the oil tank to the firewall, and moved the oil cooler into
the cowling). The empty weight increased with the 'long nosed' Rangers, so
yours has a greater 'useful load' than later models.
You have a GREAT airplane. If you are ever in my neck of the woods, stop in
and see another one. I know a fella sixty miles North of me, that also has
a K. It would be neat to photograph the three of them together. I think
that there are only eight of them left.

Let me add my congratulations. Its good to see that plane flying again
after its long rest. Ive been busy helping with a house renovation
project this spring and havent had a chance to get my 24 out yet; I
