'Ted,
Convert over to a Jasco Alt. I have all the paperwork. Just did one on a Warner 185J.
Get ride of some weight and end up with more power.

Go the jasco alternator route. It has the voltage controller and all the
wiring you will need That conversion has been done many times. I have
bought several of hem from Chief Aircraft in Grants pass Oregon. you are
looking for the Jasco kit skyt6555t1
it a 14 volt 50 amp alternator. phone is 800-447-3408 Cost about$650.00

Re: generators
'Ted,
To answer your question directly, the type307 is listed as an
accessory in the Ranger parts book. As far as the airframe
type cert A-706 appears to only list the NA-1.So yes and no. Check
your records,if it was installed before '57 it's OK.Your call.
The 307 is a decent little gen if the output is enough for your
needs. The Jasco is a good piece as well, but there will be a certain
amount of cobbling required under the panel to install properly. The
addition of the solid state Zeft controller is a simple f/w fwd
install. Assuming the gen is good remember the Eclipse is probably
set up for type B and Zeft controllers are generally Type A, but the
wonderful Eclipse design usually is ungrounded frame so to convert to
Type A is a cinch. The Jasco at around $700+ $30 for breakers+air
ducting materials +shipping, the Zeft controller (G1200 perhaps?) at
$130. You have to get a field approval either way. If you get an
approval for the Zeft we would like to see your 337. Keep the group
posted as to your outcome.

Re: generators
'Ditto on the information. TCDS E-216 for the Ranger
lists the Electric Specialties NA-1, Champion Products
W-128 and the Eclipse Type 309 generators as approved
accessories. However A-706 only lists the NA-1 as
approved for the F24R46. The Type Certificate Data
Sheets are available on the FAA web site. Go here and
do your search.
http://www.airweb.faa.gov/Regulatory_and_Guidance_Library/rgMakeModel.nsf/MainFrame?OpenFrameSet
Check your aircraft records for a 337 dated prior to
10/1/55. These 337's are approved data. If you have
no documentation on the installation, well, now is the
time to do it. When you do your 337 field approval
application, you will need to list the generator as
part of the approval. This way you will have
documented your installed equipment. Your IA should
be able to help you with this.
