Break-in

Post by Kevin »

'Hey ya'll:
Looking for some advice concerning breaking in my newly overhauled
cylinders on my F24R-9. Overhauled all 6 of them at Harrison, will
be ready to fly in a couple days.
Is it recommended to use 120 mineral oil for breakin and for how long?
Any advice on how to operate the airplane during this period?
Thanks, Kevin House'

'Hi everybody,

From my point of view when we reassembled new cylinders on Nostalg'Air's
UC-61K, we firstly run the engine with 120 Mineral oil, beginning with 20
minutes run beween 850 and 1000rpm then we stop the engine, and let it cool.
We restarted later with an other 20minutes period mainly between 1200 and
1400 rpm ended with a mag-test at 1500rpm.
The following day we run the engine like in use, waiting for temperature
increase with 900rpm, then run 5 minutes at 1400,and drive the plane by
taxying around to reach the standby point (engine between 900 and 1200rpm)
then we made 2/3 full throttle use but in voluntarily aborted take-off, so
only during short time.
And as meteorological things were not synchronized with engine test, we
decided to wait some more days before making real take-off (to use the
runway on the safest direction, as in one direction we could land into a
part of the city if the engine stop!).....and it flew during the whole
summer season with 120 oil (around 25/30 hours).

(for us we are traditionnaly using 100 mineral oil during every seasons, but
when summer is coming with high temperature, we use 120!)
