'I am in need of a rear lift strut for a 1940 F-24. I also need a cowl for a
165-hp Warner powered F-24. Both the strut and the cowl were damaged in a
mishap. I saw the cowl offered on E-bay and bid on it. I was outbid. But,
when I went in to up my bid, I found out it had been withdrawn because of
some concocted story that the seller had misrepresented it as being in good
shape. It's apparent that someone got to the seller before the deadline and
he withdrew it before I had a chance to up my bid.

Earl, I made a 1000.00 proxie bid 4 hours before closing of the
auction. It was at 500.00 when I bid, it went to 860 almost
immediately, then stayed there until it closed, and I won, no tricks.
I got the E-mail too, but did not retract the bid, and am holding
the seller to the contract, he is shipping it.'

'Earl-
I know what you mean, E-bay work in Mysterious. I
missed out on a Mag. Switch just last night. High bid
was $45.00 all of sudden it was gone! It appearently
sold for $78.00, Oh Well!!!
If needed, I have New Old Stock US Army Air Force
Green/Gray UC-61A/F24W Accessory Cowl (the cowl
between the Windshield and Dishpan)
Plus new Air Maze and inlet tube. All have 1943
Fairchild tag still attached

'Hi Jim,
What you are referring to is a common practice on
auction sites called "sniping". All you need is a
fast connection, timing and a bid that you hope can't
possibly be topped. It's tricky but it works.
Basically, you keep refreshing the page until a minute
or so is left. This is where the timing comes in
because someone else is doing the same thing. The
longer you can hold off on pressing the bid button,
the better shot you have. But usually you have to
place a bid that you "think" cannot be topped. I used
the technique a few times and have been successful at
it. Sometimes it dosen't so you keep watching for a
similar item.

'Congratulations on getting the cowling.
I was bidding on it too...as a newcomer to e-bay...I had no idea just how the
system works. I have a 24G under restoration..with a 145 Warner...but might
like to convert to a 165 someday. So I put in bids at $600-up to $840. Each
time I bid, my bid was already outdone...instantly...and I gave up at
$840...don't really need it as much as you did. Apparently if a bid is
already submitted above my bid...the computer takes my bid...computes that I
am too low...and gives me a "so sorry" e-mail.
Hope it is a good cowling. I inquired and discovered that it wasn't in
perfect condition...but that is to be expected. I also would have to go pick
it up...and I don't have time.
Send us all a photo when you get it on.

Go to E-Bay and read how a proxy bid works. I just gave a bid of
what was the most I would give for the cowl. ($1000.00) then E-bay
bid $10.00 more than you each time you bid, it would have quit at
$1000.00.'

'Hi Steve-
I am rebuilding a 1943 F24R (UC-61K Model) I am
trying to find the original military A7 Style, I
believe it made by Scintilla, the part number is
10-1597, as seen in Parts Manual AN01-115CA-4 Figure
86 item 20.
I also need the Pre-1945 Instrument Bulkhead. I'm
willing to buy or trade mine, its from a 1947 F24G(?)
Many thanks

'Jim: Thanks for the info. While I own and fly a '46 F24, most of the spare
parts I have are for a PT 26 project that I acquired. Didn't know which you
were working on. Sorry to say that it doesn't look like I'll be able to help
with your "wanted" list. It was worth the try anyway! Good luck. If I come
across anything I'll get in touch with you again.
