'Hello everybody,
I hope everything is runing well with your planes!
Right now, I am already thinking about next winter's maintenance session!
And I was especially asking myself on "how to clean properly the oil
cooler?"
Our Fairchild 24, ranger powered, as a right handside positionned cooler
looking like many (I should say every) american cooler, this big round
copper heat exchanger with by-pass valve here placed at the bottom!
(It seems to be the same on NA-T6, Stearmans, Staggerwings, etc...)
As some friends told me not to try any cleaning with current solvent or
cleaner (paint thinner, acetone,...), as I think it may be dangerous to
clean it this way without damaging weldings and letting a possibility to
make particles run away in the oil just after restarting the engine!
A friend of mine, who work as mechanics in the french air force in the late
40's until he switches to the french company Air France where he was flying
and maintaining Constellations, told me that they had a special machine with
pump and filters to make this kind of cleaning-rincing, as they usually let
the pump run a night, before reassembling the exchanger!
So, if any body does already make anything, let me know on the way you were
proceeding!
Or maybe, is it possible to get brand-new one, even from old stocks, or
making any standard-exchange???

'You might try contacting the folks at Pacific Oil Cooler Service 800-866-7335. http://www.oilcoolers.com/Default.htm . I have talked to them several times and they know what they're doing with the old ones.

It is not a problem to clean the oil cooler. Take it off and fill it with
gasoline or kerosene and let it stand for a couple of days. That will lossen
up any sludge. If you have a parts washer run the fluid through the cooler
for a whild and see what comes out if anything. I also take the temp.
control out of the bottom, takethe entire control out not just the
thermosat. You can tell if you have any sludge in the cooler. When I have
the fluids in the cooler I shake it a bit to lossen up any thing in there
and keep running the fluid to clean it out. If you have any questions
