PT Landing gear fluid.
'Does anyone have and old chart which shows the specifications for 3586
grade b oil? What is the closest thing now available?
In the early thirties Waco aircraft used a transformer oil called
Gargoyle telo. I am wondering what most of you are using in your PT's?
Do you use the same thing in the tail wheel strut? Would a tractor
R&O oil be suitable?
Thanks,
Cliff McCluney

'Cliff,
Take your choice for strut oil. 5606, Trans fluid, Dot 4 or Dot 5 Brake, Motorcycel strut. All will work. Just make sure that you flush the system out, make log book notation so you know what is in the strut. I also create a fluids useage list for the owner and Mech down the road.

'Thanks. The automatic transmission fluid looks good, inexpensive and
distinctive in color. Is the fluids list you mention for the PT's or
something else.
Thanks for the advice.

'Cliff,
I use them for the F-24 and F-22. Should work in the PT series. Check with Joe, Mike, or Mark Denest. The list I create is for the old airplanes where the old type is not available and can be critical to maintaining.

'3586 is the vegetable based stinky stuff. It's no
longer available (thank God!). Use 5606 or similar
fluid in all the struts.

'Hey Jamie! Did a bomb go off in the great West? I haven't seen any traffic
from the Fairchild
Club for a while. I picked up the PT from Arcadia yesterday, looks fine,
now all I have to do clean up the overspray and add all the graphics. It
sure feels good to get back into an open cockpit again, the vis isn't too
swell due to the citrus burning, but it sure beats the North East smog.
Whole bunch of flyins coming up, and I expect the exhaust system for the 24
tomorrow. I'll give you a critique shortly. Bob Buckingham Field Fl

Re: PT Landing gear fluid.
'No bomb out here, just F-16 patrolling the airways. I've been busy with
builders, house plans, hangar plans and all the stuff that goes with building
on an airport. Also having meetings and contacting people for our Colorado
Springs Airshow and Flyin for May. Doing annual inspections, pre-buy
inspections which takes my time away from flying.
Did you have a new Exh system built up from SS? Aircraft Exhaust System
company, let me know how well they build them.
We are scheduled to leave here the 5th of April for Fla. Taking airline. Plan
on taking both of your Fairchilds to Sun N Fun. Should be able to fly
together and park them next to each other.
