give me a brake

Post by robert hensarling »

'Hi Guys! I went and picked up my PT-19 from Louise, Texas a couple of days
ago. It's been there being fitted with an electrical system (Jasco,
starter, and acc.). The decision to have the starter installed was a safety
issue for me, as I give lots of rides here at Garner Field in Uvalde (plus I
can always easily change back to the crank starter if I wanted). Sure is
nice to sit in the airplane and push a button! My thanks to Robbie Vajdos
(Vajdos Aviation in Louise, Tx) for a fine job, and thanks to the list, and
especially to Jamie Treat for all the help, advise, and paperwork
assistance.

Only question I have at this time is that I have a great left brake, and
virtually no right brake! This has just happened, so I'm assuming air in
the right side line? King Richard (Smith that is, of Austin) says to
pressurize the holding tank to approx. 8 psi and see if that helps.

Hope everyone is having a great holiday season. Should hit the frigid lower
70's here in South Texas today, and clear out. May have to go fly!

'King Richard must have been drinking brake fluid. You only pressurize
(read the book, I think it is 5 psi) when you are going to bleed the
brakes. Then it must be released or the brakes will stay on.

'Robert,

In the Spring 1996 issue of the Flyerthere is a very good article on
bleeding brakes from the bottom. I will send you a copy of the article.
Beleive me it does work. Alan Brakefield in Oklahoma came up with the
system.

John, I recall that article now that you mention it. Hold up on sending me
a copy, I had ordered back issues a while back, and may have it. I recall
he uses a neat little pressure tank to force the fluid (and air) up the
line, and out the holding tank.
Thanks!
Robert

Yes, the King drinks lots of brake fluid, I've seen him do it :o)

All kidding aside Jamie, I did two complete circles just checking my mags
before leaving Louise the other day (because of only having one brake).
Good way to check the mags and traffic pattern at the same time :o)

Cliff, what did you ever find out was the problem with the oil consumption
on your 19? Also, did you buy the one that was for sale in Mineola? (may
have been a 26?) If so, I almost bought that one a couple of years ago. I
Ended up with a 19 from up North which had served at Arledge Field in
Stamford, Tx., then on to Kelly in SA where it was sold.
When are you going to try and come back down to Uvalde? Maybe we should
have a 19 fly-in in Burnet sometime.
