My fuel tank guages are as accurate as any (ie, generally not so great). I have
two 30 gallon tanks, and am based at a fairly high (3800ft) field, so I don't
like to carry full tanks, esp. in the summer. I have a calibrated dipstick,
which I religously use, but I always feel a bit uneasy when the guages are
sitting near empty, even though I know there are 10 - 13 gallons left in the
tank. Also, its hard to guestimate consumption, esp. in the summer, because I
often have long gas guzzling climbs to factor in.

I've noticed that fuel totalizers are now quite reasonably priced (around
$800). Has anyone attempted to install one in a 24? How did it go? Was it a
good investment? Any gottcha's? Any 337's?

I'm using one of those "Universal" clear lexan dip tubes. I calibrated
it by adding fuel in 5 gallon increments and noting the reading. I did
not start with a dry tank and I am assuming (uh oh) that the tank really
holds 30 gallons. A major flaw with my current dipstick is that since
the tank slants down towards the rear the dipstick zero's out with quite
a bit of fuel left in the tank.

A much better dipstick pattern is on the club CD rom. It uses a comma
shaped probe that gets the levels towards the rear of the tank. The
creator of it stresses calibrating your own on your tank. I'm going to
be making one up, probably of lexan, soon as I can round up a friend
with a jig saw.

You can go to the files section of the Yahoo Fairchild site and download a
F-24 Fuel dip stick that you can make and calibrate within 5 gal increments.
It is also on the CD Rom. Works great, then always go by time.
