New List member introduction

Post by Scott »

'Hi my name is Scott. Located in Bloomer, Wisconsin. Looking to buy a 4
place airplane, and my list is narrowed down to a Fairchild 24 (Ranger)
or a Stinson 108-3. 2 seats aren't enough when everyone wants to go to
the fly in breakfasts ;)

What should I be looking for in the way of caveats in the F24 series?
What is maintenance like? What is considered a "midtime" engine time
for the 200 HP Rangers? Can a guy get those rebuilt anywhere for a
reasonable price?

Looking forward to learning more about the Fairchilds. ( Really like
the F22's as I'm a parasol guy...)

'Scott,

Both are wonderful airplanes, sold my 108 for the Fairchild. The F-24 is more
complex when it comes to maint, easy to fly, fun and very honest. Engine
wise, the Ranger is a strong, powerful engine and a joy to sit behind. Parts
are fairly easy to come by, and overhauls are no problem when you find the
right people. Go to the Egroup and check out the Files section, then go to
the Parts and Service area. I am creating a list of all shops and parts
houses that will support our efforts. The list is growing. Feel free to
contact me at anytime, advice is free, love to talk old airplanes.

Contact Ed Wegner in your state, has one of the finest F-24 Rangers around.
Also super nice guy and knows Rangers better than anyone. He has the Two tone
Red one on my Grand Champ site.

If your serious, join the club, $15.00 and we (I) are also finishing up the
Fairchild CD Rom which has lots of ($30.00) engineering data. You can go to
the Intro in the Files section also.

Work number is 719-570-0782

Sincerely,

Jamie S. Treat A&P/IA

'Will be joining the Fairchild Club (mailing application today) and the
Stinson Club as well. I prefer the looks of the F24 but more complex
maintenance may have a bearing as well...I like to fly more than I like
to maintain ;) Will probably partake of one of those CD's as well. I
always like to collect data on the oldies if for good reading alone!

'Hi John,
Sent my membership in Friday. The Fairchild owners manual you refer
to...is it for the F24R (I think that's the designation for the F24 with
the Ranger)? That's the one I'd be most interested in.

'Scott

The owners manual is for both the F24R & W. It has some information on the
earlier F24's The R & W are the same firewall aft. The manual tells you
how to maintain the aircraft
and gives you the specs. We also have a Rangeer had book also.
