Temco built F24's

Post by Marge & John Berendt »

'A good deal of the 1946 & 1947 F24's were build out of left over UC-61 parts after the contracts were cancled at the end of WW II.
Temco built most of them. Fairchild contracted with Temco to build the 46F24. We wer4e told of this by ex Fairchild employees we talke to at the Fairchild Homecomming at Hagerstown in 1995. Fairchild also had a Personal Planes division at Winfield, Kansas to build the F27 the all metal aircraft that looked some what like a Navion. It never went into production. As for what is orginal on a F24 post war Fairchild that is a very good question that may never have an answer.

'Hey John. I'm ready to light off the 24 , but to drain the tank to put new
oil, the plug is a little smaller than 3/4 pipe the drain tube is aluminum
with a very tight 3/4 pipe nipple. I want to put a pet cock on the drain
tube so the oil won't splash all over the hanger floor next time. I guess
this tank drain set up is original, but they let the plumber install it. At
Temco. The lack of ground handling holds or brackets is another lack of
forethought. I'm working on something to push or pull the tail around
gracefully, rather than lean against the fuselage to move it. Any ideas
would be welcome..
How do I access the F24 Tech Tips by individual letter? Talk to you soon

'Bob,

My F-24 has the tow eyes in the inside of the Axle area, other than that is
it the creation of a tow bar for the tail. I made my front tow bar out of
short wing Piper lift struts, light and strong.

As for the Tech Tips, the Data file will only give you the month/year to look
into. You will have to refer to the paper copy. My plan is to someday have
all the Fairchild Flyers on electronic file with an Index that is linked to
important subjects. We can do it either on a CD or in the Data File on the
EGroup. That will be up to John, since we don't want everybody in the free
world to have our newsletters unless they become a paying member.

Sincerely,

Jamie S. Treat A&P/IA

Bob Hass,

A friend created the neatest towbar for my Fairchild 24. He started
with a welder's Vice Grip pliers, that had 11-inch long jaws. He cut
off the jaws and replaced them with 1-inch long pieces of steel
tubing, that would fit over the nuts on my tailwheel. He then welded
the pliers onto a steel tube for a handle. This allows me to clamp
onto the tailwheel and precisely move my Fairchild anywhere I wish.

As a further enhancement, he cut the handle in two, and made two
interchangeable ends for it, one that attaches to my tug, and one
that is the original 'Tee' handle for moving by hand. Whenever I go
someplace that I feel I may need to move it by hand, I carry
the 'vice grip half' of the towbar and the 'Tee handle' part of the
towbar, in the back seat of the plane.

I have had years of satisfaction from this arrangement.

Have Bob Waldron send you a drawing of the tow bar he has for his F24. It
works just great.
As for the information in the "Flyer" tha will be a big job to get it
scanned into a CD. AS Jamie says we want the information for the club
members not the free world. Check with an auto parts house thye should ahve
the fittings you need to drain the oil tank.

'In you email I noticed the mention of a tow bar for an F24. Could someone
tell me how to get in touch with Bob Waldron so I could get a drawing of the
tow bar he designed? I have a F24 C8C.

'John: I've gone through the list of PT drawing numbers you sent and the material that I acquired and it looks like I've come up short on all counts. I'll get your stuff back in the mail to you this weekend. Sorry.
Also, re: the towbar that Sharon inquired about for the 24: Has Bob modified the wheel pants or something. I keep taking a look at my setup and figure that he must have. There doesn't seem to be any other way to directly access thae back (inside) of the axle other than to remove the pants or cut access holes in them. Do you know how it was done? Thanks

'Steve

Well it was worth a try to see if the drawings were there. Bob's tow bar
fits on the tail wheel. It works great to pull the aircraft into the
hanger. He is building one to hook onto the gear legs to pull the aircraft
out of the hanger like the one Jamie has.

'John: Thanks. I didn't realize the one he had hooked on the tail wheel. My
F24 has a tail wheel set up that Bob Bushby had been using when I bought the
plane. I was just concerned that it might be putting too much stress on the
tail wheel strut assembly. But, it has been working fine.

Thanks again.
