PT-19 question

Post by robert hensarling »

'I haven't had my PT-19 very long, less than 6 months in fact, but have put
in quite a bit of time in the local area, plus a couple of short
x-countries. I also fly a Citabria, however most all of my time is in the
back seat (I'm a CFI at the local college). Question is: Do any of you 19
drivers ever fly solo from the back seat? I'm more comfortable back there,
and have Stearman time in the back. I think there's a "solo only from the
front seat" issue because of being able to reach the fire extinguisher.
Now I know, the view is better from the front, etc., but I'd like the back.
What say ye guys?

'Robert,

I have flown all 3 variants of the PT solo from the back. I am 6 ft and 240 lbs and have never noticed a cg problem. I enjoy it from the back seat also.

I do not recommend force landing on the interstate from the rear seat though. it is very tough to see the semi trucks you are trying to pass over!!!!!!

Have fun.

Gene, this is good to hear! Except the part about a forced landing on the
highway. Did that really happen to you?). I'm also 6', but weigh in at
190, so CG shouldn't be a factor in my case either.

'Robert,

YES IT DID!! I was on my way to Casa Grande in a PT23 when the front bearing went south. I had to pass over a semi and wheel it on about 90 mph to make sure I was faster than he was. He did S turns so no one would pass him and hit me. NOT a good day!! But no scratches other than a trashed 220.

It was the leg I decided to get in the rear set so I had more leg room! Seeing the semi and the bridge was a minor problem..........
