'Being quite new to Fairchild's I was wondering if anyone could help me
with the following question? I have seen where some of the older F24's
(the one I'm interested in is 1937) have had their lower horsepower
Ranger engine upgraded to 200HP. Is this an engine change or an engine
modification? How is it approved with the FAA? By Service Bulletin or
337?

upgrade from 175 to 200 hp. To my rather pedestrian level of
knowledge, the heart of the upgrade is the carburetor, pistons, and
rings. My engine was converted (upgraded?) during an overhaul in 1964
and the only documentation was a logbook entry, complete with part #'s
and a reference to all work being done in accordance with the Ranger
Overhaul manual. I would assume that a 337 would be required now.

Good luck with your airplane, the short-nosed F-24 with a 200hp engine
performs really well. Oops, let me clarify that statement: The short-
nosed F-24 with a 200hp engine performs better than the post WWII
models, all other factors (prop, engine condition, etc.) being equal.

'That is true I had a C8 F with a two hundred conversion among other things,
except it's very crowded at the firewall

Joe will need to know the serial number of the case. There may be a problem
if it is the original power plant.

Allthough I have not yet seen this particular aircraft the info I do
have says the engine is a Ranger 440. Which I assume to mean the
original engine has been replaced. I will learn more from the owners
in a week or so & we will go from there.The airframe serial number is
#3229 N12120 in Ohio.

'Not necessarily, John. The engine will have a data plate on the right side
that will tell you what model Ranger is installed. The 440C-5 is the 200hp
version.
