'I have a '39 F24. How much play should be in the tailwheel connecting
link where it attaches to the fuselage? I seem to have excessive side
to side wobble as if the bolt holes are elongated at the fusealge
attach point. Thanks in advance for any input. - gary'

'Gary,

You should near zero. The tangs that are welded on the square tubing were
never designed to last this long.

This is what I do. I take steal bushing stock and weld in place on the
outside of each tang. Then I cut out the center section. I then install
bronze bushing stock. When bushing wears, I press out and install new
bushings and bolt. Back to near zero clearance.

'Jamie - As I suspected and a similar fix to what I envisioned. I just bought this airplane from Kevin House (great guy, by the way). He had a tailwheel shimmy and sent it to Charlie Bell for rebuild before my purchase. I suspect this may have been the problem all along. Now, will this require some fabric work that may keep me from Sun-n-Fun...

Thanks for the help. - gary

'Gary,

Met Kevin and his wife last year at Sun-n-fun. I flew Bob Haas's 24R46 to
the event. Met Al before he passed away. I purchased a landing gear for a
24W40 model than I'm rebuilding.

If you Tig Weld you can do it without any fabric work at all.

'Jamie - Thanks for the help. I'll let you know how it turns out.
Are you planning to go to Sun-n-Fun this year also? If so, I'd like
to meet you. Last year I camped under the wing of my Starduster Too.
I plan to sleep under my Fairchild wing this year. - gary

'Gary,

I plan on going to Fla. If my Dad is up to it, will head that way. I may end
up flying a Pt-19 to the event.
