'Been thinking about replacing the tires on my PT-19. They're not that bad, just a peace of mind thing. What is the proper size and a good source for them? Are there any mounting concerns? I've put several hours on the airplane during the last couple of months, sure a great time to fly in South Texas!
Thanks!

'Bob,

The size is 6.50x10 if you have Hayes wheels it is a lot of fun to get the
old tires off and the new ones on.

'Bob,

As John stated, 6.50 x 10. I get mine from Desser Tire.
http://www.desser.com/ Shipping is free. Get new tubes at the same time,
keep old for spares.

I am trying to get Desser to make the old Diamond type.

As for dismount and remount. I take mine to a real tire shop, old time shop.
Forget Sears and Discount tire. Big-O has come thru at times. Call around to
the ones that mount ATV/RV tires. They have the smaller mounting tools for
the Hayes. They can also balance them for you with the adhesive weights.

'Hi

It isn't any fun to put tires on the Hayes wheels. I take my wheels and
tires and tubes to my local tire shop. They have a four-point hold down system
for rims instead of the center one which is too big for the Hayes wheel. The
charge is nominal and if you tell them they are airplane wheels, they will
probably take extra care as my tire shop does. Hope this helps.

'Order them from Desser. Also, if you have a tire shop that does aluminum
rims, they will have a machine that will work on Hayes wheels. Its worth the 10
bucks or so. I use Les Schwab Tire Co. here in Idaho.

'Hey Robert...concur with what everone else has said, except the first
time I did it a couple of tire shops weren't equipped and
couldn't/wouldn't do it. Ended up at a shop that does race cars and
dragsters, should be one like that in your neck of the woods. As
long as they have the right machine, it shouldn't be a problem. Be
sure to tell them to be careful and they are for an antique airplane
and you'll be fine.

The last time I put tires on the PT it was at a Les Schwab(big chain
in the west). Both times the shops I went to did it for free 'cus
they thought it was cool.

Also, consider retreads, they're much cheaper and readily available
as they're the same size as Cessna 310(and probably other) tires.
Just make sure to tell them to match the sidewalls if you want them
that way otherwise you can end up with mixed brands.

'Robert,
I have some extra tires if you need some. All of them have
never been mounted but I don't know how long ago they were made. They are
all 6.50X10.00. Two are Goodyear Flight Custum which I need $90.00 for two
plus shipping. One is a Mcquary Type 111 wich I would sell for $25.00 plus
shipping.

Buell, thanks for the info. I'll keep it in mind. Will probably re-tire (the PT-19, not me) during the winter.
Robert
