'Hugh, please explain why you recommend wheel landings only. I am not questioning your advice. It is just that I am a new Warner 165 F-24 pilot, 100hrs. And want to learn all I can on the subject. Thanks

'JP,  I think it was in the thread somewhere by Hugh.   I normally two pointed it on black top due to tail wheel shake.  When it came to grass, I almost always three point. The aircraft is a delight to land either way.  If your tail wheel is in excellent shape, either is normally fine on the blacktop. The Post War F-24 is a two spline system. Wear in this area is the major cause of shake. Also wear in the drag link and attach points contribute. I have flown one F-24 with the longer drag link, not much help.  Charlie Bell has been modifying the F-24 to a PT 6 spline system. Not cheap, but it works.  Hope this helps.  JST

The smaller vertical fin and rudder on the pre-war airplanes is quickly blanked out by the fuselage. The post war airplanes the fin and rudder are half again larger and rudder authority is correspondingly better on landing. Take off is not as big an issue as there is propwash over the rudder to help keep the nose pointed the way the airplane is headed.

'JP, Wrong pilot. It was not I, Hugh, who recommend "wheel landings only" in this thread on flying an F-24. I am not qualified to dispense any advise on how to fly a Fairchild F-24 other than at all times when flying one do not, ever, damage it.

'Jamie, I sure can't find the "attached" service bulletin, not on the Yahoo site, nor in the messages in my e-mail inbox.  How can that be. any chance you can send it out again?'

'No.  It is mentioned in the manual.  Here is a copy.  Sorry that is upside down.  I have no idea as to why, the one tank at a time.   To be briefly on both isn't a problem as when switching tanks.  It may have something to do with the right side fuel lines entering the accessory area at the center of the firewall and is exposed to engine heat.  If the flow rate is slowed while on both, it could have something to do with it.  That is the only guess that I would have.  I haven't any notion about where the vapor lock occurred.  Oops I didn't see that Jamie had already replied.  Any way, running on both tank just to experience vapor lock is something I won't try.   The gentleman that I bought my Fairchild from said that clearing the vapor lock while in flight is questionable at best.

Bob, Not questioning the CAUTION on one fuel tank operation, but can you or any other group member provide specific technical rationale why vapor lock or any other problem would occur with both wing tanks on line feeding fuel??

Unless someone has changed the fuel valve recess, they both say "CAUTION operate on one tank only".   You operate on both for more than a brief period, longer and you run the risk of vapor lock.    See page 11 (Fuel system)Another one for the fool hardy.  Don't spin a Bellanca 14-14-3, the book on most of that series said don't.   1/2 turn is mild, 1 turn is nasty, 2 turns or greater you will understand why they said don't spin.  During the pull-out, the "G" load goes way up.  The gent that told me said his hands were pulled off the yoke, his glasses were in his lap.  He had no idea abut Gs, but he said he won't do that again.  The moment that he kicked the rudder, the Gs went off the scale.

80 on the approach, carry a little power, plan on landing first third of runway, slowly bleeding off power over the numbers, wheel landing every time, Three point only in an emergency off field landing. One tank on at any time. I have never read where both tanks open at the same time was recommended. Have fun..
