' I guess that my struts were modified some time in the past.   There is small screw that I could remove that was located just below where the strut cylinder flairs outward near the top of the cylinder.I found a tool to remove the treaded piece at the top of the strut cylinder.   It was sold by Proto Tools.  Simple it was.   It was like a simple compass, about 6" long, but had the right size pins on each arm pointed in the correct direction.  I had to a slight bit of grinding on the inside edge near the pin.   The end of the arm was too thick so it wouldn't allow for the pin to seat in the holes, and have clearance with the strut.  I seem to remember that was less that 1/16" needed to be removed.   The tool was very low tech and the price was OK.  Figuring that I may only use it once.
