'The gold color is a result of a supplementary chromate coating for the Type 2 cadmium plating process in order to increase resistance to corrosion. Refer to ASTM specification B766 for Types 1,2 and 3 cadmium plating. Type 2 plating is an upgrade of the Type 1 bare cadmium which turns a chalky white color over time and exposure. 
Chemical removal of the chromate coating with lye defeats the purpose of the upgraded Type 2 cadmium plating process.
