gemme a brake part two
'I've got all my stuff together to do the brake bleeding process, as per the article John sent me. No problem on getting all the parts except the adapter that fits into the screw hole at the wheel. Dad took a 32 X 8 brass screw, about 1" long, and drilled a 1/16th" hole through it's entire length. Then I took a 2" piece of 1/4" copper tubing, and tapped the inside to fit the screw (a little loose), and JB welded the two pieces together. Now this goes into the hole at the wheel, and the 3/16's plastic tubing goes on the copper tubing, so I'm all set. I may try the system out tomorrow. I'm going to use dot 3 for now, just to get by, then when winter really sets in here in Texas (about 60 degrees), I'll flush the brake system with methyl ethyl alcohol (as per John), and use dot 5. I think I need to put some sort of compound on the threads of every connection when I do that.
Anyway, that's my story for now, will give an update when I try it out. You guys and gals have a Great Holiday Season!

Dot 3 is a very good paint remover. And it is a bit on the corrosive side.
I use a sealer called "Tite Seal" I get it from Chief Aircaft Supply in
Grants Pass Oregon their phone is 800-447-3408. titeseal come in two
weights I use the medium weight Dot 5 will find every leak you have in the
system. I have one small leak but the amount does not bother. Also it does
not take off paint.

'The discussion brake fluid is of interest. I am not sure if DOT3
itself is corrosive but it's biggest faults are it's superior paint
removal ability and it cannot hold moisture in suspension. DOT5 can
do this thus it produces less corrosion problems and doesn't make
that funky jelly. Hence DOT3 systems pool moisture in low points and
when saturated, a jell type translucent goo forms and exaserbates the
problem. Now as far as performance, I think DOT3 is superior in most
categories, boiling point(with rubber expander tubes????!!!),
expansion rate, and best of all it's sealing qualities. DOT5 will
creep forever, no problem for a flyer, but drives hangar queens and
clean freaks nuts. There is not much you can do about it, modern DOT5
applications have modern seals, flares, cylinders, etc., and seepage
is contained. DOT4&5 are popular with ABS and sophisticated system
user where corrosion and moisture problems are devestating.
DOT3 works well in a 24, thats what it came with, but you will also
note that they used to change it every year. That's what keeps DOT3
systems going. Change it every 12-24 months and all the moisture goes
with it. You just have to get good at bleeding brakes! DOT5 also works
well but unless you have a top notch sealed up system it will creep.
By the same token,unless the system is sealed up DOT3 will eat the
paint.
Now comes the question of what fluid to use if you have Cleveland
calipers(mil-5606 fluid) and Hayes masters (DOT3 originally)? HMMM.
There is also a unique bleeding technique available to expander tube
systems that old Cub mechanics use that works quite well. Anyone want
to hear it?'

solvent Resistant Sealant. Purge system with Denatured Alcohol or MEK. Watch
out for other mineral based thinners, will do damage. Make sure that system
is very very clean, any cross contamination will cause foaming action and
will render brake system spongy at best.
Make sure you placard next to the Master Res and make an entry in the
Airframe Log, highlight it. I also suggest you make up a Fluid list in the
back of the log telling you what fluids are going in what system. That will
help out the next person when you sell the aircraft. My 24R46 is running
three different fluids depending on what area.

'Skydrol 5606 is even worse for damage in the brake system parts. I have 5606
in my Tailwheel strut. Have Dot 4 in Main Gear Struts. Some people use, 5606,
Auto Trans Fluid and Motorcycle strut oil. All will work in the struts, not
brakes.

alcohol today, may put in the Dot 5 mananna.
