News from Tonopah Nv.

Post by robert Etter »

'Hi, another Fairchild 24 nut is on line. I've owned mine for 32 years. Flew it for several years, took it apart, and have been having one hell-of-a-time trying to get it back together. 98% of the fuselage wood is new, and 100% of the wing wood is new.

Now if I can really figure out this d____m computer inter-net stuff, I could be all right. My alternate address is: rletter@sierra.net.

Two things that I have learned in recent months is that I have a good idea as to what the "N" numbers on the wing and tail once were. I have two photographs, front and rear, of an original piece of rudder fabric from NC81345. Also, I learned that I had part of some original wing "N" numbers on my right wing tank. There was enough of the "N" and "C" to determine height, width, spacing, and width of the individual parts. John B. may be publishing some of my CAD drawings in the near future. If someone would like the drawings in .BMP format, I could try to send it direct to them.

I hope that this get out, I hate to waste my time typing when I could be working on airplanes.

Bob (24W46 NC81340)

'Thanks for the come back. I am trying to get the old girl back up, but time
and money don't always come together in the proper portions. The old girl
did need alot of work. Regarding what I said about the fuselage and the
percent of old wood, all I am reusing is two curved tack strips from back
near the bagage compartment, and the piece that goes from side to side just
behind the rear spar carry-thru. Nothing else was usuable. The wings
weren't even that good. Marginal, even as patterns. Of course that ain't
too bad, since the airplane was almost a total write-off in 1948. The right
longeron? (spelling) from the motor mount back to the rear of the cabin, was
torn up. Right gear gone, both wings were write-offs, and the top of the
cabin was bent, and the wood on the top side was broken most of the way back
to the tail. I am pressing on. It still will take a couple years.

Thanks again for the come back,

Bob

'Bob,

Get those CAD drawings and what ever else would be useful and send to John B.
or myself in order for me to get them included on the CD Rom for the
Engineering Drawings. (See the other Emails, will be in the next letter
also).
Sincerely,

Jamie S. Treat A&P/IA

'As I come up with a drawing, I have been sending copies to John. Would you
like everything that I have at present, and in what format would you like
it? I haven't done any successful transfers of data via computer links,
yet. I guess someday I will get it right. I can also send a hard copy. I
have drawings for a door lock that is much revised from what you saw
published some time ago, and drawings relating to the size and placement of
"N" numbers on the tail and wings. There is a lot of fact in the drawings,
and in some small matters, a "WAG" Wild A--ed Guess, in the interpretation
of another photo used to complete the drawing. I did an installation of a
mount for a strobe power supply out in the wing tip. I located it behind
the spar and outboard of the aileron. I put it out there because I don't
line High Tension Lines to run any farther than necessary. I haven't
completed the paper work on it yet, but I don't see a problem. The
installation uses ideas gained from the landing light installation. As how
the mounting plate was installed between the ribs. The remainder is pretty
much straight forward.

'Bob,

Since I'm in the Electronic Tech Date Business, electronic form is best for me. Let me know what type of electronic file you currently have. If none, I can get all the paper that you sent to John, then scan in, when I get ready to build the CD Rom.

'I restored my 24 a few years ago and it has won three awards at SUN AND FUN.
The most recent award was grand champion antique in 1999. I'm looking for a
pair of wheelpants in any shape or even a pattern so we can duplicate them.
We have some good metal people here on the ranch...walt

'Walt,

I have a set that would be good patterns. Might fix one but it is probibly quicker to duplicate it. $100 plus shipping.
