Hi, this is my first post in this forum although I read it since a couple of years ago.
I own since 4 years ago an F24W. (in fact it is an UC61A) The only one flying in Spain. I bought it in a very good shape but I am restoring it to mint condition.
I am having problems with the tailwheel, I want to change it and I don´t know what to buy. the 10"x3.50X4 seems to be the best choice but the hub of my tail gear is 3.5" diameter. Any advice?
Thanks a lot
Javier

Good Day Javier,
I have a 1937 F24 but it has been converted to a Scott tailwheel. I have no knowledge of the maintenance on an original tailwheel. I was told by a rebuilder of an 1946 F24 that on originals you should use the original type smooth SC tire and not the Scott type, which I think means the flat style.
Unfortunately, as you can see the migration to the new web site has not materialized as hoped for. I think the older members are more comfortable with posting replies on the old Yahoo Group Fairchild site, which now has limited function. You could try joining that group if it is still open or, if you wish, I could repost your question on that site for you. Let me know.
A few more specifics would help. Are you just looking for a certain size or is the tail wheel requiring over haul, ie, what are the symptoms. Hope this helps.
Regards,
steve b.

I believe the original hubs are for a 10SC tire, which would have been a smooth tire. Which are crazy expensive today and don’t last long on asphalt (or so I am told). My 24W-41A came with the Russ Aircraft adapters (
http://www.russaircraft.com/adapter.htm), letting me run a more common 10x4.0 treaded tire. After some tailwheel shimmy caused a steering rebuild, it has worked pretty well. No shimmy if I keep the tire pressure up, and long tire life.

Cameron Grossl rebuilt my tailwheel assembly. He did a great job and so far, it appears my shimmy is gone. I have the 10.00 SC tire, which is what came with the airplane. Hopefully, I won't see any shimmy any time soon.

Mike
